FAQ: Cheaply Keeping a Pool Hot -- 90F,95F,100F -- How we ran till Jan 11th in Canada

Hi there...good to see you pop back in! 2700 is right around where I run the heater and I agree that it seems to work just as well - I now have a variable speed pump too ;) I’ll have to check into foam covers...haven’t seen anything like that in these parts! Is it easy to roll? I just got the...

New pool next week, whats next?

Hi human, I’m late getting here butjust wanted to add that if you’re getting .2 as opposed to 2 from your spigot you should be fine on the copper front. I wasn’t confident in your pool store test reporting 4.0 on copper from your tap...that’s virtually impossible even with very old copper...

    Should I continue to SLAM?

Hi Debrina. I’ve tried to catch up on this thread but my time is super limited so I’m not sure if you’re solid on FC nowand asking for metal advice or still stumped on FC. Youhave used so many different products now that I’m not sure how to advise...can you summarize in a list exactly what...

    never give up

Heron, just to be clear, the purpose of a is to kill algae and sanitize a pool. As I mentioned before, that’s just the baseline in your case because you had metal and product clouding. Even Revive tells you to first “shock” the pool, which means the same albeit a different and less precise...

    never give up

No worries Heron...we don’t know what we don’t know until we know ;) So, I can see a few things causing your cloudiness, least of which is the alum. After you’ve done a slam, we’ll see if a few days with the pump off and then a vac to waste will help you get some of that out. Despite your...

    never give up

Re: slam didn't clear, at a loss If I recall correctly, you are on well or otherwise had iron, correct? Then you added Pool Magnet. Then you slammed. This is not really a straight slam problem. This is a metals-tint-possible organic-product use problem, so your results may vary. Eg. Metal...

Brownish Staining - Goes away w/ dry acid but comes back

Hi. Sorry I don’t have much to offer in the way of ideas, but if dry acid removes it you may wish to try the Puurity pool underwater acid wash wand using MA. Apart from iron and copper, manganese can also stain brown, but is most typically found in well water where there is also iron. After...

    never give up

Hi Herron. The best way now to handle the presumed iron is to WAIT until the is over, you have passed the , allowed the FC to drop to normal sanitization levels — per [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA] AND THEN add the sequestrant. We’ve found Metal Magic and Jacks Magic to be most reliable, but if the product...

The msds I just looked up on line says it’s phosphonic so you can try it. I typically only recommend ones that I have personally used and know work.

Brand New to pools clear water but green tint to water

Hi again. Sorry I missed your post the other day so I’m not sure if you’ve gone ahead or not but do you have your kit now? If you do, it wouldn’t hurt to do an overnight chlorine loss test to make sure you don’t need to before bringing your cya up to the recommended swg levels...I’m assuming...

Brand New to pools clear water but green tint to water

Hi again. Even if the copper is not the source of the green now, (eg if it was algae instead) at .8 on a new pool it holds the potential to stain. So in your shoes I would drain it, even if it takes two rounds of draining, to get the copper down to a more manageable level. The reason pools will...

Brand New to pools clear water but green tint to water

Jaflores, welcome to TFP. Since your pool is new, you read .8 for copper, and you know how it got there, I am going to propose that you do a minimum 60% water change to get it down to or below .3 ppm. THEN treat with Metal Magic or a similar HEDP (diphosphonic acid) product to sequester what’s...

    Metal stains and sequestrant

Dlwx, Metal Free is not an HEDP sequestrant. The MSDS used to say it was citric acid but now doesn’t state at all what’s in there. In other stain threads where I’ve helped people, they seemed to have trouble with it. I’ve never used it, but wanted to give you a heads up. In your shoes I’d take...

Drain/Fill due to high Cu levels

Lads, be sure to get your TA handled first, then see what the water looks like. If you test higher than 1 ppm copper, I'd likely drain to dilute. But if you're under that, you might have decent luck with sequestrant. Copper can stain at anything above .3 ppm if not sequestered.

How to clean worm stains from pool plaster?

^yes, that's my "go-to" metal spot treatment...but I only have a mask and snorkel so have to hold my breath ;) To the OP, if you end up needing to do the wand approach, I neglected to mention that I mix the ascorbic acid powder about 50 percent with water to ensure it flows when I press the...

How to clean worm stains from pool plaster?

If for any reason after a few days the stains don't resolve and appear orange-ish (eg. From the iron in decomposition) since you have gear you could also use a bit of granular ascorbic acid (vit c) in a dishwashing wand right on the stain. But wait and see...if its mostly organic it will likely...

    People tec pool with cracks

Good morning, rejean. You don't need to say here whether you're pre qualified for a conventional mortgage or whether you're seeking a fed-backed FHA mortgage with a low downpayment, but you did mention feeling a bit cash-strapped, which is part of why this situation would be a bit of a red flag...

    People tec pool with cracks

Dirk has made an excellent post with great advice. You make your money on a house when you buy it, not when you sell it ;) I know its hard to remember that if you fall in love with a particular property. With that said, I bought a foreclosure that I loved...and ended up winning on the ROI...

    Neighbor left pool unattended

Just so you know, Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac each have line items for pool care that they will pay for if the agent is on the ball and submits invoices. Some brokers don't seem to be aware of this. When I made an offer my foreclosure (which had gone completely black) I'd looked into this, talked...

Adding a water softener to our house water system

^In which case you might want to consider a dual tank setup. I have a dual tank setup to avoid tapping out on top up because in my case I have a lot of iron in my well. The only downside to filling from softener, aside from regeneration and brine waste, is that eventually you need to ADD...

Why Drain Pool with High CYA?

Hi Bryce, and welcome to tfp ;) I just wanted to emphasize this aspect of your question ;) A: To kill water-borne pathogens. Matt alluded to this but I think it bears emphasis. The founding science behind the TFP philosophy is that your FC (free chlorine) should be kept at 7.5% of your CYA...

    Rookie School of Hard Knocks

Maybe I'm not a good reader today, but Tyler, did you mean that you were only having trouble priming after you'd opened up the system and let it drain? My pump is a few feet higher in a pool house and that happens to me if I shut down and open the pump to clean the basket. I close all the...

Stonescapes Aqua Blue finish turned black

^Yeah, you're likely thinking as I am that typical metal staining simply isn't that uniform, at least in my experience...tends to follow flow patterns. There is a good article over on Aqua Magazine outlining bonding grid testing I think, geared to in-industry folks, Fred, if you'd like to...

Freeze Protect Electric Bill! Please Help

Dieselman, the freeze protect is a form of insurance for these temps.
