    Pecan tree sap (honeydew)

I know this is an older post, but I'm replying in solidarity. I too am in Austin and I've been fighting aphids for over a year. We had to spray the back yard again this year and I'm again fighting pool chlorine issues. I posted about it last summer and no one on the forum seemed to know anything...

CH - how high is too high?

Yup, I'm learning that. Add more chlorine, dummy.

CH - how high is too high?

Had the trees sprayed 3 weeks ago then just had it done again on Friday and I still don't think it got them all. These things are a nightmare. I've cleaned up the back yard a bit, but I'm waiting until I'm sure they're gone before I do a full clean up. We also have a lot of pecans falling, and...

CH - how high is too high?

Got it. More chlorine it is then!

CH - how high is too high?

My water has been a little cloudy lately and I'm wondering if it's because of the high CH. Full report below. I added some muriatic this morning, so my pH and TA are lower than usual. Is it time to do a partial drain? FC: 5 pH: 6.8 TA: 40 CH: 700 CYA: 70 Salt: 3200

    Aphids killed my chlorine!

100% agree with all of this. I used to run at around 4 FC and had all kinds of problems. I've been aiming for 10 lately and haven't had any issues at all. This incident was a perfect storm (literally) where I was out of town for a few days, the SWG had an issue and shut off, and we had a massive...

    Aphids killed my chlorine!

I posted this at the bottom of another thread, but it's going to get buried on the third page so I wanted to create a new thread for posterity. For the last 3 summers in a row, we've gotten a massive rain that has caused my chlorine and CYA levels to drop to 0 and make my water super cloudy, as...

    What happened to my water?

This article seems to corroborate my story, if anyone is interested. https://www.poolspanews.com/business/chlorine-sucking-flies-the-sequel_o

    What happened to my water?

Hello all. I have an update. After many, many gallons of chlorine, I finally managed to get the water to register an FC above 0, and then I accidentally overshot and ran it up to about 30. Oops, but at least it finally got clean. So that leaves the question of how I got there to begin with. I...

    What happened to my water?

I don't have an autofill, so that's not it. Yeah, I know what ultimately caused this (low FC and a lot of rain) and I know how to fix it. This is the geek in me needing to understand what's going on in this giant chemistry set we call a "pool" 😆

    What happened to my water?

As in water leaking out or in? Leaking out doesn't seem like it would affect CYA at all. Leaking in might if it brought in bacteria, but I can't imagine any leak being enough to affect your chemistry by much.

    What happened to my water?

The bleach I started with is only about a month old. I bought 4 more boxes today and have had the same experience. I must have ammonia in the water, I just don't know how it got there.

    What happened to my water?

Possibly? We have a lot of trees, but it doesn't seem like that should be enough. Not getting any groundwater or runoff in the pool as far as I can tell. Our house is pretty new and we did a lot of work with the drainage. It's a head scratcher.

    What happened to my water?

This has happened 3 times over the 5 years I've had the pool, so I do know how to fix it. It takes a crazy amount of chlorine (like 6 gallons) and eventually clears up. I'm really looking for the root cause, and that's why I posted it in the Deep End section. It seems to follow the description...

    What happened to my water?

I've added 3 gallons over a couple days. Whatever is in the water is immediately canceling out the chlorine. I can't get it to register FC at all. As I said above, I suspected ammonia, but my ammonia strips don't register either. https://www.troublefreepool.com/wiki/index.php?title=Ammonia

    What happened to my water?

I've joked before that I could make a fortune bottling up whatever is eating my CYA. If you had high CYA, it would be a lot easier to use that stuff than to have to drain. 😆

    What happened to my water?

I'm central, so there's plenty of development close-ish but not close enough to be affecting my pool. And this has happened 3 times over almost 5 years, so I can't pin it on a recent change. It only happens during a perfect storm (pun intended) of high rain and low chlorine because I screwed...

    What happened to my water?

HDX - Home Depot's house brand. It's good stuff. Edit: scratch that. My Home Depot is carrying Pool Essentials now.

    What happened to my water?

Not at this point, but I could a few days ago. There were leaves from the storm but nothing else.

    What happened to my water?

The FAS-DPD reagent is a few months old and registered fine a few weeks ago. It stays inside in a dark drawer. Should be fine. I tested FC with the OTO viewer prior to taking that picture. It was clear too.

Have I discovered a new water chemistry phenomenon? 😂

    What happened to my water?

I can't get FC to register at all. I just did the CC test also and got 0.
  23. Drew80

    What happened to my water?

No, but we do have a lot of trees. I assumed the storm was blowing bacteria off of the leaves, or something like that.
  24. Drew80

    What happened to my water?

I can't get FC to register at all. When this has happened to me before (third time now), I've had to add 6 bottles of bleach before FC would register. This is why I suspected ammonia, but my ammonia strips aren't registering anything either. Perhaps the answer is that my ammonia test strips are...

    What happened to my water?

Nothing was added other than rain water. This has happened 3 times now after big storms.

    What happened to my water?

@Texas Splash It doesn't look like algae to me. It's not green at all, just cloudy. And I've had algae a few times - that doesn't cause my CYA to drop. I think something else is going on. @mknauss just did the drop test. Nada. 0 FC.

    What happened to my water?

We just had a massive rain that added about 4" of water to the pool. I drained it about 7" and then refilled a couple inches. Everything seemed fine. I then left town for a week and came back to super cloudy water. The salt meter on my automation equipment says that my salt is low and isn't...

Cloudy water - time to drain?

@PoolStored did you make that rig yourself?

Cloudy water - time to drain?

Especially over the summer. We've already hit 100 a few times this year, so I've been filling a couple inches a week.

Cloudy water - time to drain?

@IceShadow I've been trying to get TA down for literally 4 years with no luck. I finally just decided to ignore it and only focus on pH. Happy to entertain any suggestions, but I feel like I've tried everything.
