What is THIS?????

Is it Algae? The mustart algae just came back (tiny bit on the seams) so I immediately checked everything and started bringing my FC level up. Brushing daily - sometimes twice - since Sunday and discovered this black stuff in the skimmer this afternoon. Obviously I"m going to attack it with...

Can I finish up my chlorine tabs?

Thank you! Got it! For some reason I had it stuck in my head the FC/CYA chart was for SLAM only. No worries, I will figure this pool stuff out yet !

Can I finish up my chlorine tabs?

While I'm letting my SLAM FC level come down (it was at 12 on Sunday), I'm wondering if I can use up my bucket of chlorine tabs we got when we opened the pool. There's maybe a 3rd+ of the bucket left. Or do I stick with liquid chlorine? And if so...how do I know the correct amount to put in...

@Zea3: Thanks! I will leave TA as is and not sweat it unless PH changes! YAY! @Divin Dave: You can rest assured I will be following TFP recommendations! (can obviously toss out the container of YellowOut left by previous owners, and more than likely the partial container of Algecide the pool...

Algae FREE - HUGE Thanks to ALL!!

Did my OCLT test last night and verified this morning - zero chlorine lost!! YIPPEE!!! In my excitement last evening, I did check all of my levels. CYA was a little high at 60, but we had sooo much rain, our water level was at the top of the skimmer, and our TA was a little high too. We drained...

effects of rain on SLAM & Algae

Day 2 of rain. Algae is still present at about the same amount - mostly on the seams. Water is crystal clear. SFC is at 28 as of 5:15pm (should be 24, so we're good for now). Obviously, water level has risen and I'm sure we will have to add some amount of bleach before going to bed to keep it...

    Algae Update & SLAM

Yes, shock/SLAM FC. Guessing I acronymed when I shouldn't. ? Things are looking good. I vacuumed late afternoon, added 1 gal of bleach. Level dropped from 27 to 20 as of 5am this morning (monday). Will be adding more bleach and a good brushing before I head to work later. I'm going to be...

    Algae Update & SLAM

Before I started to SLAM, pool was cloudy and algae seemed (LOL keyword) less. First round of bleach cleared the cloudiness algae level was about the same. SFC was at 24 before turning in for the night but by morning had dropped to 11 and lo and behold....a wee bit more algae. Being new to the...

    Algae on the skimmer frame???

somehow the skimmer frame was overlooked. I didn't notice until we were filling w/fresh water after draining quite a bit last night. I went crazy with a small brush, but what I really want to do is unscrew it and soak the heck out of it! Will water get behind the liner if we take it off now...

Re: Algae Update & just got test kit - Next steps? @Richard320 - I haven't taken any water out yet. Are you saying I really don't have to? If all I need to do is SLAM (right now) then I will get more bleach on the way home tonight and get it started. :-) - - - Updated - - - @ctrav -...

Re: Algae Update & just got test kit - Next steps? I was just looking at the pool math. I've been using 6% bleach concentrate. Guess I need to drain some water first. Pool Math said to add 64oz of 6% bleach 422oz baking soda (for TA) 209oz stabilizer or 519oz liquid stabilizer I've read the...

Re: Algae Update & just got test kit - Next steps? No problem to drain some water out & add fresh. So continuing with bleach & brushing will take care of it? Or that also in combination with the lower CYA? Thx!

Algae Update & just got test kit - Next steps? While waiting for my test kit to arrive (since Sunday), I have been adding 1 gal bleach to my pool and brushing 2x/day. This morning (Wed) pool was cloudy but I noticed the algae seemed a bit less. I took this as a good sign. Got home from work and...

    Dog in Pool

@tschaefges: great picture! Our two black lab pups just discovered our pool. They are fine when no one is in the water, but if there are people in the pool, watch out! They tend to jump in wherever they feel like it. They are learning where the exit is, but tend to be more interested in where...

Thanks tim5055, I'm on it! Just ordered the test kit, xl opt, and speedstir. No worries about the pool store, it's ALWAYS packed with people and it takes forever to check out. SO glad I found this site!! We just moved into an older home (Cir. 1972) with an IG pool last fall. Opening the pool in the spring was a surprise. Lots of debris and stains that looked like from leaves and waaay too much chlorine on the bottom of the liner. I use test strips every morning to...
