I have a Hayward variable speed pump displaying a Pump Stall Error as described by others in an older post. One step they described was to check that the impellers were not blocked. How do I check to see if the impellers are blocked? I don't see anything that can manually be turned. Is there some disassembly involved?
Edit: I cleaned the cartridge filters yesterday as well as the 2 basket filters located near the pump. The motor started fine after reassembly and ran the remaining 3 hours of it's schedule.
Furthermore, I don't think it's an electrical problem as I hear the pump gently "thud" or "click" as it attempts to start, then nothing.

You can get to the impeller by first turning off the pump power and close any 3-way valves to the pad. Then open the clear lid to the pump basket and reach down into the pump inlet. With your fingertips you should be a flat, fan-shaped impeller than should rotate relatively easily by fingers.

Thanks. I did as you described but I'm not able to feel anything in there with enough finger contact to turn anything.

It's a Hayward SP3400VSP

Yup, that is an EcoStar. Contact Hayward and see if they will do anything for you. They have helped other customers who were past warranty. Hayward knows the EcoStar has reliability issues.

Consider replacing it with a TriStar VS pump.

One more question on this subject. My EcoStar SP3400VSP has the faulty drive unit which can evidently control the speed and schedule of the pump. I have never really looked at this control keypad (I didn't even know it existed for the first 2 years I owned the house!). I use my Hayward Pro Logic controller exclusively. Controlling the on-off schedule is really all I use it for. Isn't the pump drive redundant and unnecessary? Can I use a Hayward or Pentair pump that doesn't have a drive controller? Dumb question?

The Prologic controller just automatically tickles the buttons on the drive controller. You need the drive conroller working to run the motor.

All VS pumps have some form of drive controller. You can fall back to a 2 speed or single speed pump. However In the United States, variable speed (VS) motors will be required for all pumps over 1.1 total HP as of July 18, 2021] Purchasing a single speed pump or a 2-speed pump now for a new pool is discouraged.

OK, thanks. I guess it's off to the high-price pro dealer for the model pump that will replace my bad one.
Here's the conclusion I've come to: Replacing the drive or the motor with another SP3400 would be asking for more trouble. I've been advised that a Pentair will not "talk" to my ProLogic control panel; that more electronic hardware would be required. Therefore I think I've settled on a Hayward TriStar VS pump with professional install to extend the warrantee period. Sound like a reasonable solution?

I agree that Hayward Tristar VS pump is best for your setup. The Tristar seems to be a lot more reliable then the EcoStar was. The TriStar is the next generation Hayward pump and they learned a few lessons.

Did you contact Hayward? Did they help resolve, discount or offer any suggestions?
I have read on a few other forums with same issue that Hayward was offering the Tristar VS950 for $729+tax and free shipping, or replacing the board.
Welcome to TFP.

Hayward used to do that but I have not heard of them making that offer recently.
