Pool Still Green After Opening

Yup. Already bought several gallons of bleach, a large box of baking soda and also a box of borax in anticipation. I guess if anything else is needed I will have to get it.

Don't think we have a to waste. I even asked the pool store guy about that and he said we didn't since we had cartridge filters. So yeah, had to do the cleaning the hard way by taking them out and cleaning them myself.

Having a cartridge filter doesn't automatically mean you don't have a "to waste", they're just usually not built into the filter housing itself. I have a Hayward packaged unit--filter and pump together on a single plastic platform--and the union between the pump and the filter is actually a diverter valve that has a plug and a handle to direct the pump's flow out of it instead of into the filter. Depending on your setup, you might be able to add something similar.

See, you learn something new every day! I'll have to post a pic of our setup one time and see if anyone can identify if we do or not. I can't say that I remember seeing anything about "to waste" in the binder thingy they left behind (I'm usually just looking at the pics for how to switch the valves when cleaning....LOL), but who knows.

What do you use the scales for Fun?

Shopping list:

-2 2cup plastic measuring cups that have oz. marked on them. One is for muriatic acid, one for everything else.
-white, plastic plate to hold up behind the PH testing tube. It helps dial in the color matching
-toothbrush-WHAT????? yeah a toothbrush for your pool. This is for cleaning around the returns and skimmer.

I really think your green came from very fresh algae rather than metals. With the way it has already changed color with no signs of yellowish stains I think you are good to go.

I am VERY interested to see your equipment set up. I LOVE the idea of plumbing a way to vacuum to waste before the stuff hits the filter. Of course that will mean you will have to add water to replace what is vacuumed out so you will have to weigh the options and see what works best for you.

BUT saying all of that..............I am willing to say you will NEVER (never say never) have to do this again if you follow the TFP way!!!! Your pool will be clearer, sparkler, easier than it ever was before! At night, when the water is still, you will look out and wonder where your water went as it will be so clear!

Great idea on the toothbrush! When I first opened this year I was looking at the returns and skimmer fixture thinking the brush wasn't getting around any of them that well. So I unattached the brush from the pole and got down on my stomach and reached in and used the brush by hand. LOL The toothbrush would have been so much easier!!

Also, last Summer we kept getting algae growing behind the cover we have over our light fixture (we just have it over the light to give the pool a little color at night). Was constantly having to take it off to clean it.

You go big time using the scales! Well done! Me? I just the oz markings on the side of the cup and call it good.

STG, can you go ahead and take that cover off and clean it good AND take the light out to clean inside it? Bet you find a little mess in there.

Well last year we actually had to replace the light bulb so it was all pulled out and the plastic that goes around the light was scrubbed as was the cover I'm talking about. Luckily nothing was BEHIND the plastic covering (meaning in that wall well or whatever you call the thing the bulb sits in). Just the outside of the bulb and all around the plastic housing and the cover. But yeah, algae kept getting under the plastic cover on growing on that and the glass over the bulb. Was a real pain in the rear!

Here is a picture of my Hayward cartridge filter system. The waste port at the back of it is simply plugged from the factory. You just remove the black plastic plug and install a Hayward ball check valve like so. Use Teflon tape and silicone lube or pool lube, add a cheap vinyl drain hose, and voila. Instant waste feature. Save the plug if you want to plug return jet, or skimmer openings for winter. If you have this extra port on your cartridge filter unit that is.... If you do have the extra port feature, it may say waste or drain. Yeah take some pictures of your setup, I'm curious.

So earlier in the week I bought several bottles of the regular bleach at Walmart that has 6% Sodium Hypochlorite for under $2. Then today I went and looked in the pool section and they had Pool Essentials Chlorinating Liquid for almost $4 a bottle but it had 10% Sodium Hypochlorite. Is one better than the other? Would you recommend I stick with the cheaper stuff even knowing the strength is less?
