Houston, TX Pool Build Diary - From Design to Dive-In

Love the travertine pick. That is going to look really nice with the patio. I was hoping banana trees would do well here! Good to know they will. That's awesome. Will the bananas fall into the pool though? Those are the inedible ones aren't they?

Thanks!

As for the bananas, I have no idea LOL! This is the first year it's ever happened since we planted them. These are just random non-specific bananas from a local nursery.

ok call creative stone. If not apex. Those are houstons top 2. Yes I know Apex is Sealy.

The way we are using them, it's just 3 steps and really is a pure aesthetics thing. Nobody will be hanging out on them ever I don't think. Access into the pool for the most part will not even require crossing them since the sun shelf area is in front of them. Funny about the freight from Turkey. Quantity discount I guess....

Thanks badcrc. Coincidentally enough, Earth Friendly was our very first stop. Great selection, but no bluestone unfortunately.

Thanks!

Found it at Custom Stone Supply. Our previous landscape architect came back with 3 sources to try. They were the very first one we called and they can get it and have it fabricated to our specs. We appear to be set!!

Thanks!!

Well the Prep & Landing crew just got here a little while ago. A mess of pickup trucks and workers. They are pulling out existing landscaping and putting into a temporary bed so we can try and re-use as much as possible after construction. The yard is of course a swamp due to the rain yesterday. It does look like it will be dry for the next few days, but then rain again next week. Sigh.....

Still not sure if the dig will be tomorrow for sure or not due to the wetness. We'll see.

The Prep & Landing crew knocked it out of the park! We'll see for sure what lives and what dies in a couple months (or sooner... :( ), but regardless, the work they did could save us upwards of $2k depending on if one of the trees they removed survives.

You may remember the photo of the extension cord we ran over to the neighbors yard a few days ago. That side of the yard only had a few trees and nothing else. The crew created a temporary "Eden" over there out of everything they removed. It actually looks better than some of our yard did!!! This is most but not all of it.

Here is the yard before:

And after:

We received a few samples of waterline tile yesterday. We took a chance on the one we thought we were going to like the most and bought three sheets of it. We're very pleased with how it looks in the sun. With the Cool Blue PebbleSheen it looks like we are going with, this should tie in nicely to the white plaster "classic pool blue" look we'll get from that.

We put some white paper towels behind the tile sheets. You can see what a difference in color the tan of the patio tile does to the color in between the sheets where it looks darker. I kind of actually like how that gives it a richer look. We'll maybe have to play with thinset colors.

The pavers in front are travertine in Colorado which is what we are going with for the deck and coping.

Ugggh...

So the builder called the utility marking number again and set up a remark appointment for all utilities this week before the dig. Thank god he does it twice because we just found out our phone line runs right through the dig as well as our power (which we knew and have moved already)!!! They did not mark it there the first time! Evidently it looks like it is run in the same trench that out electric was run.

Our builder was un-phased when I called him. Said this is partly why he has it done twice. Said to call the phone company and ask them to do a temporary above ground line move and then have it buried after construction. They are coming out tomorrow to look at it and get it done before our dig which is now set for Thursday of this week.
