A Houston Pool Build Inside the Loop

Someone mentioned in another thread about a surge protector for the pool equipment. Is this standard procedure or something I should ask for? Curious to see who has them. Or do I need it just for the AquaLink?

Well we have a permit! The next step will be to remove the pecan tree. I think we will be meeting with the PB soon to discuss it. I would like to save a piece of the trunk and have a table made from it. I will need to do some research to find out how to do that. And we will want a few pieces for firewood/grilling.

PERMIT!!!!!! Oh yeah let the fun begin.

I LOVE the idea of a table out of the tree. I use pecan wood when I grill all of the time. It gives such a nice taste to the food.

I agree with Kim! Having a functional, beautiful memento like a table out of the pecan tree will help lesson the pain of having to take it out. That's a great idea! And imagine the delicious BBQ you could make with the pecan wood too!

I have to ask...........why is it up to your PB if you can keep the wood? (I am sure you have noticed I question everything LOL)

Who do you get to make tables out of trees? I have never even thought about something like that. This will be quite an adventure.

Kim

Kim, they gave us a great price to take down the tree using their tree person so I wanted to make sure he wasn't keeping it all to resell as the reason for the price.

If you google how to make a table from a tree stump there is a lot of info. Basically I will need to let it dry for a couple of months. I will try to do it myself.

Kim, I think we went to the library!

Right!

We actually bought our kids an "old" used set of World Book Encyclopedias (from 1986) and they enjoy reading through them. Some stuff is obviously out of date, but some stuff will never change, so it's nice to have a "hands on" reference instead of the internet all the time.

I read books to my kids (students) all of the time. They always say they like it better than watching the video! "We get to ask questions and talk about it."

Jamie that is neat you did that for them! I bet they loved it!

Marla,

Before your PB starts digging, here's one thing to consider w a few confirmations.

You may receive a pass on full sun hitting your pool most of the day, but since we both live in Hou., we know the best times to use our pools is when it's the hottest. From July-Sept, pool water temp's in Hou can really heat-up. W your pool being on the smaller side, and prob 10-15% of it real shallow w tanning shelf and ledge, you might want to consider a chiller. The smaller your pool is, the quicker it will heat-up, and pool temps of 85-88 degrees are going to be the norm if you get 4-6 hrs of sun. Our ambient air in Hou in the summer is sometimes 80+ degrees in the coolest of the mornings. Now, since your pool is smaller, the good news is that it can be chilled down faster. Believe me, I've lived here 48 yrs and getting cooled-off is what it's all about. If you installed a chiller, you will be using it A LOT MORE than you will your fire-pit in Houston. Run that by your PB and the folks here w pools in the Texas areas and see what they think.

Good luck and I wish I could have relocated your tree to our ranch near Columbus TX. Shade in the summer is always appreciated.

We were always at the library! We, too, bought an old set of encyclopedias when we homeschooled our kids. I have always loved encyclopedias! That WAS our internet for researching papers for school. Ahhh the good ole days!

Marla I really hope you can save some wood for your table! That would be so special and, I'm certain, gorgeous.

You and Jamie will have your pools built before I even get my lines moved....guess I'll just have to live vicariously through you both :)

Tstex, thanks for the info. Once the tree is down, I am going to see how much sun my yard will get. Right now it's mostly shade. I will ask about the chiller if it looks like it'll be too hot. Is this something I can add later?

I truly regret having to cut it down, but having lived here in this house 35 years we weren't moving and that's the only way to have a pool. If it coulda been moved I would have done it, even though it's gotten quite scraggly.

Denise, I am going to save a large piece to convert to a side table or perhaps a small coffee type table. Maybe I'll even keep 2 in case I mess up one! I think it has to dry for a couple of months, then I peel off the bark. Sanding is next and then I'm guessing I'll have to put some kind of preservative or sealer on it. Otherwise it'll just rot. I'll read up on it more once it's down. I think it'll be a nice rememberance.
