Noob to the forum. Looking for CYA advice

Monday calculated and added 8lbs of dry acid to achieve a CYA of 30 in a 28k gallon pool.
Tuesday nights test resulted in 40 CYA in my now 22k gallon pool.
Did you add 8 pounds of dry acid or 8 pounds of stabilizer?
Two vastly different chemicals.

It is recommended NOT to use dry acid in a pool with a SWG.

8 pounds of stabilizer granules in 22,000 gallons will raise CYA by 44 and lower pH by abour 0.81
1gallon of liquid stabilizer (128 oz)will raise CYA by 17.

Exactly what product did you add?
How did you add it?

And if you are in the SLAM Process, why are you adjusting any levels except FC?

He is in SLAM process. He is not adjusting anything but FC. He had pool volume off, which we spent the last page sorting out. He did addition at start of slam with a larger pool volume, which meant he added 40ppm instead of 30. We are good...

Dry stabilizer in socks, go back a few pages and you can see his rig...

Ok, great!
So likely pool volume may be a bit over 22,000 gallons (8# = CYA 44), but still within the +/- 10 ppm of the CYA test.

Tests this AM
FC 14.5
CC 0.5
PH 7.6
TA 150
Salt 2400

Technically I think I have completed the SLAM. Last night at 7 I tested FC 14.5 and CC 1.0 then added 41oz of LC targeting FC of 16
40 minutes later I was FC 15 and CC 0.5 and went to bed.

Do I have an OCLT of 0.5? Math says yes but I never reached my target of 16. Should I add 500 gallons to my pool volume in the app?

The target doesnt matter, only the actual. You can't lose what you didnt have in the first place.

So you started with 15 and ended at 14.5. The also 0.5 CCs makes it a no question pass, so long as the water and all the surfaces are TFP clear. (y)

Should I add 500 gallons to my pool volume in the app?
I wouldn't. Between rain and evaporation it'll always dance at least that much. 2 inches for me is 1000 gallons with a 20x40 so 750ish for you ?

Then you get slightly degraded bottles of bleach to be off further at times. Don't worry, you'll be a former jug lugger soon. Welcome back to SWG club. :)

I agree with @Newdude Right now, you are overshooting with your additions...that means your pool volume is LESS than the 22K. Probably your shelf/steps account for a bit less volume. I'd leave it. It gives you a bit of skoosh with degraded chlorine etc.

All good!

Reminder, always follow this now, and keep your FC at the top of the range. FC up to and including SLAM level is perfectly safe: Link-->FC/CYA Levels

From Tabs and high CYA to now...Look at you. We want pics of this pool!

Post up too...Link-->How Clear is TFP Clear?

SWG gets here this afternoon, cant wait.
So speaking of SWG's my test results are inconsistent. Monday evening I tested 1000ppm and added 4 40lb bags, Tuesday evening I tested at 1500ppm and added another 4 bags that resulted in 2800ppm before calling it a night. Wednesday evening I tested at 2200ppm added 2 more bags. Thursday morning I am now 2400ppm.
Few things I can conclude:
My test Tuesday evening is wrong, probably did not circulate enough before testing.
This must be the +or- 500ppm of error during testing
And quality of salt does matter. First 4 bags were SureSoft from Homedepot, next 6 were Diamond Crystal Splash Ready

How long should I wait to test after adding salt?

Brush until its dissolved then wait 24 hours of mixing minimum. Most of us wait 48 hours of mixing before trusting the last add.

Any 100% pure bag is the same.

I calculated my pool steps/shelf to be 500 gallons. I'll add pics tonight.
Thank you everyone for all the help.

24 hours.
Accuracy is +/- 1 drop in 10. So at 3000ppm, 1.5 drops, or +/- 300ppm.

Right.

Nope, circulation and test error.

I'll get 6 more bags tonight (probably need 5) and continue bottle feeding LC until I get a salt test in the 3000's after a 24hr wait. Then fire up the SWG

How did CYA change? There is no new test logged. What additional 10 CYA?
Am I the only one who has trouble getting a confident CYA reading? I even went and bought a bottle of the R-7065 CYA standard, which should yield a 50 reading, but I can still see the dot at 50. I read the R-7065 at 40, when the dot disappears.

So then, based on what I see of a "faint dot" when I fill the tube to the 50 mark with R-7065 @ 50% with reagent, then I have to try to guess when the dot reaches similar "faintness" during the pool water test. You'd think someone could come up with a better system.

?? I thought stabilizer is a dry acid?

I added directly to my skimmer, as directed. There were no warnings about using this with SWG, so hoping I didn't shorten the life of a brand new RJ-45+.

Have a read:

Dry Acid is sodium bisulfate, is used to lower pH and should not be used in a pool.
Dry granular Chlorine Stabilizer (cyanuric acid) raises CYA and is fine to use. Do not pour in a skimmer. Put it in a human sock, tie it off and hang in front of a return.

We are coming up on a weekend and if you can test and add every two hours, you will make significant progress. You can even slam late into the night.
