Horse pool

The green thing in the yard is a pop up emitter drain - not sure if it’s connected to the pool. You may have an overflow pipe either in the pool wall or inside of one of the skimmers that leads to this.

They sell prefilters (sometimes called cyclones) in most residential pools they are unnecessary but I can see that being helpful in your case.

I too imagine that the red valve goes to the main drain(s)

You’re right to be concerned about a gator 🐊 & polio lol 😂

First order of business is a large sand filter with an mpv so you can vac to waste and start filtering. Without this you’re simply in a holding pattern.
$400/$600 can get you one at various places like doheny’s, inyo pools or even amazon.
You can add a prefilter later, and a swcg if you decide

Waterco’s award winning MultiCyclone is a brilliant pre-filtration device that works on the basis of centrifugal water filtration and is designed with no moving parts and no filter media to clean or replace.

I am not frail, but keep in mind I have spent 2 days fighting a stuck driveline on my pto on my tractor . Why you ask? Let me tell you, lol. Someone bent my rotary cutter parked it and never said a word . Ugh ! After this 2 day fight ,I'm pretty tired of it , and might accept defeat ! Lol
I'm kind of handy . Yet not strong like a man. I can saw pvc and put glue . My horses like to break pipes . So as time goes on ,I improve . Lol
I'm thinking I'll try it myself . As long as i understand what is happening . I'm prepared for a cost of $2k .
As far as a pool boy . I have some expectations and requirements . Must work shirtless and have a sense of humor . It's not against the fiber of my being to watch a pool boy work ! I can do possibly $2700 . If he does it.
As far as a backhoe . I'd love a super m with the joystick and clamshell. Except my horses are afraid if I get one ,they will come up missing . Especially when they break a pipe ! Lol
That being said would a 24 inch sand filter be enough ? Will my pump be ok with that size ? Or does someone have a link to a filter that will work with my pump and handle the horse gunk they leave behind.

@Arowdy1
One that holds 250# - 300# of sand (24”-27”) should do ok & be fine with your pump.
Much bigger than that and you’re looking at a pretty good jump in price. If you can swing that its great but not detrimental if you cannot.
The deal is that the bigger the filter the less often you need to clean/backwash it.
For reference I have a 26k gallon pool and a 22” 250# sand filter- i only need to backwash a handful of times per season.
I likely don’t have the debris load that you will experience but you will just need to backwash more frequently than me. Get the largest one you can afford. As we mentioned above you can add a prefilter later if you determine you need one to help keep the filter cleaner.

Most sand filters you find when searching will have an mvp (multi port valve) on them already.
Its the handle on the top that you select the mode you want to be in (filter, backwash, waste, recirculate)

Be sure to purchase #20 silica pool filter sand for it
- i would advise against using an alternative filter media type especially in your situation.

I, too, love the idea of a centrifugal pre-filter. No idea how it will treat the hair, but it makes all the sense in the world for heavy dirt.

See if you can plumb the filter so that you have a run (2ft) of straight pipe up off the ground on the output side before you connect to your pool returns (the pipe currently on the output side of your pump). You’ll be glad to have it when you get to step #672, installing a salt water generator.

I think I know your driver… just made this same repair for my dad. Apparently he left our place and went to yours. There’s a good shop in Houston that can straighten that shaft. Give me a few days to remember the name.

I'm thinking of buying this filter . Almost did then I thought maybe I should check the size of my plumbing ! Lol Since we are currently under a t storm . I'll wait to look . Lol Screenshot_20250502_160224_Chrome.jpg
I read how to install it . I'm pretty sure I can do that .
Am I in the right area for a filter ? Will this one work ok ?
Thanks

That is a good sand filter if you have 1.5" pipes.

If you have 2" pipes get the same model with the SP071621 2" control valve.
