Hi Rocket, I noticed the same leak on my pump outlet. Just want to confirm that you remove the union and apply some tape to stop the leaking? Was there any oring failure? Thanks!

@joshuazzx You're responding to the wrong guy. I've never had a leak.

was this your post?

was this your post?
Yes. It was so long ago I'd forgotten it. Clean threads, fresh tape and careful tightening solved it. I haven't had a leak since.

Josh,

Please show us a pic of the 'bad' unions.. I want to make sure we are all on the same page as to the type of unions being used..

Thanks

Jim R.
I removed the union from the pump, cleaned up the o-ring and sealing surface. Put a little magic tube on the oring and tighten it up. It stopped leaking.

Josh,

Thanks for the pic.. Hard to tell for sure, but that does not look like a "pump union". It looks more like the kind of union that you get at home depot.

Pump unions have two O-rings.. One between the two halves of the union itself, and another O-ring around the threaded end the goes into the pump.

Did your union have two O-Rings? If so which one did you clean up and lube?

In any case, glad you got it working... :goodjob:

Thanks,

Jim R.

Hi Jim,

Maybe you are right. It was installed by previous owner, I am not sure where it was originally from. I would assume it was installed by the pool company who installed the pump.

I cleaned the o-ring at the thread end goes into the pump as that is where I saw small leaks. I did not notice another o-ring and was also very surprised how it could hold. The inlet of the pump had the same type of union. Next week when I clean the filters, I will remove it and check again.

thanks

If something is not leaking, don't disturb it or it will. Happens virtually every time some one "just checks."

Just to update, there is no o-ring between two halves of the union, but there is a round rubber gasket at the end of on half, when the union is tighten, it seals on the flat surface of the other half.

Another thing is I noticed this morning, there is small dripping of water at the filter outlet, especially during priming when pressure is high. I cleaned and lube the o-ring, still leaks but slower, like one drip per minute. Does it mean the o-ring need to be replaced?

Any suggestion is much appreciated.
