Taming the big green monster

I just got them myself. Takes a bit of practice to open them up. <sigh> I'll use 'em up and go for a different one next order. My previous order of a different type had the elastic dry rot or something while stored outside in the pool shed.

Same thing - dry rot - happened on the others I've used. These were by accident but hoping maybe they'll last longer than the elastic ones. Thanks.

Been AOL with pics days 10 and 11 since no drastic changes and the weather's been cold.
Day 12: looking much better but raining and hard to get decent pics this morning. Air temp 50, water temp 57.
Water level changes due to vacuuming, cleaning pump basket, changing out fixture after water loss mishap, backwashing, , rain and refill, CYA is down to 30, maybe 40 so I'm letting FC come down a little since SLAM is 12-14 FC.

Maybe better pics later when the sun comes out.

Where is the best place to purchase DE for the pool? Overpriced pool store, big box store (do they even carry it) garden DE?
In the past I've only purchased the synthetic DE "wanna be" at the pool store.

Sand filter people who use D.E.
How much do you use in a swim season? 25lb is the smallest I can find and that, to me, seems like a lot.
I made the mistake of buying several bags of CYA but hardly use any. Don't want to do the same with D.E.
Thanks

Back, from our FL vacation to our humble abode just in time to start the grackle battles and continue the SLAM.
Water level was very high due to rains while we were gone. I vacuumed the grackle poop from the pool out to waste, scrubbed the top rails and tested levels.
FC 6
CYA 30 or 40 - I can barely see the dot at 40 but definitely not visible at 30, so not sure which to use.
TA 70
pH 7.1 or maybe 7.2
My questions (you'd think after 12 summers I would be more confident in these areas) are:
1) Do I bother raising the pH to 7.2 or 7.3? The bird poop will wreak havoc on this.
2) Which is better: to use the CYA reading of 40 for the higher FC SLAM level or go with 30 and slightly lower FC SLAM level?

So it's somewhere between the two and always rounds up. Use 40.

It's fine as is.

To use the actual level it is. Which is 40. :)

We have reactivated the grackle war at our pool.
Several years ago, I had stated I would rather deal with the poop on the cover vs. on the bottom of the pool.
I retract that statement.
Now without a winter cover and subsequently bird poop on the rails and on the pool bottom, it is much easier to clean the pool than to clean the cover. No larvae, bugs, birds using it as a bird bath or dead things that stink up the cover and make it almost impossible to clean.
We won't be swimming for several weeks anyway and this way we can enjoy looking at the water instead of the ugly swamp the pool cover becomes.
In our area, the grackles only come around in the late spring. Once they are done with the hatchlings and they've flown the nest, the problem stops.
