Switch to SWG?

All the Hayward systems, determines the salt level from, amps, volts and water temperature. Each of which influences conductivity as well as the salt level.

Some SWGs are worse than others at calculating salt levels probably because of calibration issues and variable internal resistance which can throw off the calculation. But I found that my Hayward is pretty close to the Taylor drop kit unless the cell is dirty or starting to fail. But full mixing of newly added salt is necessary to give accurate results.

Dirk, it had been running about 30 hours since the second (and last so far) salt add.

I noted the salt PPM number changed from 2700 on screen to 2600 as I was watching it after initial start up. A couple of minutes ago the Default menu showed 2700 PPM, but the Diagnostic menu still showed 2600 with about the same power usage at the same 55°F water temp (air temp 72°).

I also note the Default pool temp is 55°F and the Diagnostic Cell water temp is shown as 65°F. Is the water warming a bit inside the cell as electrical current flows across the plates?

I'll test chemistry tomorrow - chlorine was low when I tested three days ago - so, I should be able to see some change.

I noted a "CSM Comm Error" that I have never seen before, but I must have enabled the Chemistry Sensor during my button mashing ... so, disabled Chemistry Sensor (I don't have one) and the warning deleted itself.

The k1766 is accurate to +/- 200. Most cells are +/- 400. So in a perfect storm, you may be 600 off, if one reads fully high and the other low. Then add in your own testing error because you are not a drop machine and it could be further off.

When the cell is happy, you are happy.

The instant salt readings will decrease with time on. This is because there is fairly high current in the circuit board and as things heat up, resistance increases and current to the cell decreases. This has the effect of reducing the instant salt measurement/calculation. The average salt reading in the unit is taken shortly after the cell is powered on and averaged with previous readings. This is probably going to be a closer value to actual salt level than the instant salt will be.

If I want to increase salt, I can add while the system is running without damaging anything?

If you decide to add any salt, turn off the SWCG. Mix the salt really well with the pump on brushing the pool. Start the SWCG the next day.

mknauss, yes, was planning on turning the cell off - but, now that you mention it this would be the first time ... duh, do I simply turn Chlorinator to "Disabled" while the pump is off? Then "Enabled" following pump on for 24 hours or so?

That will work. Or you can set it at 0% generation.

That's sounds good. I go longer, but that's just me. I was just reminding you that you turn off the SWG and wait until the salt is well mixed after every salt addition, not just the first one. (Same thing Marty is saying.)

Well, shoot - now, the low speed doesn't work. Won't directly shift diwnnwhile running in high, and when selected from off, it runs if high with the 3 minute countdown, then just shuts off.

Did you leave it on low for 3 min.? Priming override is 3 min long.

Would the 50% setting conflict with built in logic? ie if I set it to 25%, would that meet criteria ... maybe flow rate regulated?

Are you saying the SWG doesn't run on low or the pump?

If the swg does not run on low, the flow rate is too low but the unit should give a low flow warning on the display.

When I select low speed while the pump is running, the pump just shuts off. If Low is selected first, the three minute countdown begins and then at zero the ohms shuts off completely.

It was running in Low fine prior to initiating the SWCG device ....

There is a setting in the configuration menu where the pump will shut off if the flow rate is too low. This is only available with an SWG flow switch. The setting is under Fiter and it is called Flow Monitor. Disable this and see if the pump will run on low.

mas985, Just went through entire Config >Filter menu - did not see a Flow Monitor category.

It goes from filter speed selection to freeze protect selection ... no Flow Monitor ... my ProLogic panel looks like this ...watched an older panel they said was PL, but looked like AquaLogic that had Flow Monitor selection.

Maybe I should disconnect system tomorrow and see if the low speed is available?

In the manual on page 24, it shows a Flow Monitor setting. You have a ProLogic, correct? What is the version?

In any case, the display would show "No Flow" if that was enabled and the flow rate was too low.

When the pump shuts off, is there any message on the display?

Are the arrows on the flow switch installed in the correct direction?

Try setting the pump low speed while the controller is in service mode.

- tried normal ops this morning, but low speed pump will not run
- tried setting chlorination to 0%, but low speed speed pump will not run
- disabled the chlorinator function, but low speed pump will not run
- secured breakers and then disconnected the cell power and flow switch (yes, it is pointing the right way), but low speed will not run
- popped cover off pump and pulled every connector, every weren't, made sure every wire was connected and seated, but nada on low

Grrrrrr ...

Ran through every single possible function selection that I thought related. Then EVERY function selection ....

Sigh ...

Aux 1 was set to Timer - this seemed odd, and I recalled an earlier issue with Low Speed (my thread - Low Speed Not Starting Following Normal Three Minute High Speed Start) ...

Duh ... reset Aux 1 to Filter Low Speed. Everything works correctly now ... second photo of cell parameters on Low Speed.

I am embarrassed and sorry for wasting everyone's time on this last speed issue - I SWEAR I did not change the setting under Aux 1 ... there was no reason to even select it ...

And, since I am not getting a flow warning, it is operating OK on Low Speed!

And, looks like the average salinity has increased from 2600 to 2800 PPM, whoops, just dropped to 2700.

So, next fascinating finding .... after a few hours on Low Speed Filter ... I get "Chlorinator Off Percentage Met," and "Instant Salt 0000 PPM," and the Flow Switch is still being made.

So, I shifted to High Speed Filter, and got "Chlorinator Off Filter delay:xx," and then went to diagnostics with the last photo. Not sure what is happening technically, though. Is the cell turning off on Low Speed for a reason that doesn't appear clear from any of the manuals I can find. Once restored to High Speed everything starts working?
