Iron stains AA plus Metal Magic?

I buy a Jack's Magic Sequest Test Kit on a impulse buy when I found it cheap and my levels are around 12 where they should be. If I had it to do over would have passed and just added a little every couple weeks and saved the $60.
I also don’t want to add it if I can get away from it, but I think my iron is coming from my stone coping.

Update Day 3

2:00 pm Pool looks perfect. FC and CC 0.0 (not surprising). So I added ~4 ppm liquid chlorine. Plan to dive the pool and inspect closely later today. I think I'm done and will just report back occasionally on photos of the Polyfil. When the particles drop down to not discernible I'll stop using it. Fingers crossed that this works and I don't need monthly additions of sequestrant. If that happens I'll probably just replace the water.

Plan to clean the cartridge tomorrow but I think the polyfil is getting most of the particulates. Got some nice close ups of the bottom today with my dive gear. Close inspection looks great. I'll download and post them later tonight. Weird pH dropped back down to 7.2 after sequestrant addition. Fresh calibrated meter each time. FC is starting to hold.

I cleaned my filters due to flow being down some and they were actually not bad..The Jacks filter fiber was a caked up but nothing was rust colored or dirty looking like last time..The Metal out did help the stains so not sure why nothing is getting captured

***Edit: Sorry having trouble with the other 2 photos. Will try again later.***
Update: Day 4
  • 12:15 pm FC 2.0 CC 0.5 pH 7.3
  • Pool still crystal clear. Most of the photos had too much glare for my underwater camera, I'll repeat today w/o flash. First photo was taken about 8" off bottom. 2nd was about 2' off bottom both in shallow end. 3rd is another photo of the polyfil. Will clean cartridge and edit in the photos of it later today.

Keeping a close eye on this. I have the exact same issue, city water with trace iron. I've decided to wait until next spring opening to do this procedure to minimize any algae issues before swim season. It's going to be mid 90's to 100+ the next two weeks, I can wait. :)

I love all the sea creature tile accents, especially that crab!

Not a bad idea, I did mine when it was hot but had got bad and was driving me nuts. I did add polyquat 60 which kept the algae away :)

Update: Day 6
  • OK pretty cloudy pool today. I had read this can happen with Metal Magic as pH starts to rise. Filter pressure is way up also. So I'll be cleaning filter frequently 'till pool is clear again.

I had an awful time with cloudiness after using metal magic. It raised my phosphate level to 4500! Not sure if this was the cause of my cloudiness but it took 2 weeks of 24/7 filtering to clear it up. And my phosphate level is still 4400 after $80 of phosphate remover! Chlorine was over 8 during this time so I don't think it was algae bloom.

Nice! What is your pH now with cloudy water?
Where was it at before the cloud?
Low during treatment was 6.9 then stayed at 7.2 for a while. I added some borax to raise pH to ~7.5 then added the Metal Magic. After MM addition pH dropped to 7.2 then gradually increased again to 7.4. Then I started adding liquid chlorine. Two days later I noticed the cloudiness. Cleaned the filter and replaced the Polyfil in the skimmer. Both were loaded with this sticky gel-like material. Pool has cleared up a lot with a day of filtering. Running all night tonight.

Photo's today were taken around noon today.

I'm sure my phosphates will increase as it's a natural degradation product. The instructions indicate cloudiness can occur after a week of dosing when all of the stains are lifted and for high TDS water. I sort of accelerated the process with AA treatment first which removed all the stains in a few hours. Since I have a salt pool I'm also naturally high in TDS so I was expecting the cloudiness and I'm hoping this is an indication it's working. Instructions indicate it will take a week to clear or I can use a floc treatment. I'll take the week of filtering over adding floc. I've used floc in water treating plants and with no way to dispose of settled floc in my pool I think it's not workable in my pool.

Thanks for your reply and I'll keep updating 'till it's clear.

Update Day 7
  • pH 7.4, FC 1.0, CC<0.5
  • Pool is crystal clear once again!
  • Looks like my AA/MM treatment is complete and very successful
  • Indications metal was removed as tiny, tiny specs but not really conclusive 'till I go a few months with no stain return without addition of sequestrant... stay tuned. I'll update each month or so from here on out.
  • Photos below are from 2:30 pm day 7.

Day 10 update:

After our pool was crystal clear we started swimming again and noticed the pool clouded up. I think this was some of the fluffy gel flakes that settled on the bottom and weren't visible. Getting in the pool stirred it up enough that it became a little cloudy. Running the filter overnight cleared it up very quickly. We noticed this each day for a while and to a lesser degree each day. So last night and today I ran the robot with the fine filters. I think that should completely clear it.

Morning of Day 10 photo's below. I hope this helps.

Hi Chris! I thought I would resurrect your AA and MM thread. I was curious how your pool is doing through the winter. Any signs of additional iron? I am still confused if the MM "takes out" the iron that reacted with the AA. Now that you are several months out have you noticed any other oddities that can be a by product of this treatment?

You did your iron treatment in the summer... I am going to do mine when I start, waking my pool up from its soft winter close next month. So I thought I would pick your brain and see how it went.

I did mine earlier and I noticed I have iron stains again :( Have 5 pds of AA but waiting a few more weeks.

I have a question, to remove the iron from the water using metal remover and something like fiber filter is it best to have low chlorine or high?
