Just bought OXI & ION Cell system to my new pool, wondering if anyone have experience with similar system. My system use copper and silver ionizer and oxidisation with 500ppm salt to generate small amount chlorine for pool.

If anyone have or know someone with similar system, I would be greatly appreciated if can share tips and tricks need to know and how system been working generally.

We call those 'magic'. They do not work to keep your pool clean and sanitary. You still must maintain your FC based on the FC/CYA Levels. The metals will stain your pool.

Its not Ozone system and system are not allowed add CYA, Copper levels are to be kept 0.2-0.5ppm that amount should not stain pool. Do you have first hand experience or know someone with chemical free pool? I'm askin here if someone can share experience with similar system.

My neighbor tried one of the copper ionizer things about 8 years ago. It was not sanitary, people got rashes, and while there was no staining to the pool, people with blonde hair came out pretty green. If you want sanitary you will need chlorine. All the metals do is inhibit algea growth. It does nothing for bacteria and other nasties that will be present in what equates to stagnant bath water. Ironically, if your chlorine is at the proper levels in the first place, you wont need the magic potions to stop the algae.

Also Repe, to be clear, this is my family's experience. Not a story from somebody that we know. We were itchy and green ourselves. It took several times to figure out. We don't fault my neighbor for buying into the hype at the time, we believed it too and it sounded too good to be true. And it was. Shortly thereafter we built our pool (unrelated, would have happened either way) and we knew to stick with chlorine.

We've used a copper ionizer for 8 years and have not had any problems with staining, green hair, etc. We like that we can keep the chlorine level much lower, given that our kids spend lots of time in the pool and we try in all aspects of life to avoid or reduce exposure to chemicals when possible. I found out about it from my father in law who has used a copper ionizer for probably close to 20 years.

because copper isn't a "chemical" but chorine is. LOL

"Exposure to chemicals" is an imagined concern. Exposure to bacteria and viruses is a very real one. Copper does nothing to protect against the real problems.

Your pool, depending on the FC/CYA level, is likely unsanitary. The same pool that your kids spend lots of time in. This, to you, is logical?

Uh, no, I probably save more on chlorine than the ionizer costs, though that isn't our main reason for having the ionizer. An ionizer lasts a couple seasons and my chlorine bill is a lot less for a couple Arizona summers, which are quite long.

As for the comment about copper being a mineral also, that's true, but the amount of copper in the pool is very minimal and the benefit of a whole lot less chlorine should be self-evident, particularly for my kids, one of whom has a lot of skin sensitivities.

Here at TFP we are all about science, which has proven that copper is not a sanitizer but just a inhibitor of growth. So you are not killing, just holding off whatever there is in the water. Myself, i like the killing part!:hammer:

Nope, they aren't self-evident. Please do share these benefits, preferably with reliable studies. Also studies how exposure to copper is less dangerous would be good. If it's not too much trouble some data on the dangers of waterborne illness and how these are less concerning than chlorine exposure. That would all go a long way in bringing us around to your way of thinking.

:epds:

Or don't, if you wish. It is your pool and your kids' safety to manage as you see fit. However when such unfounded statements are made here they don't go unchallenged.

No, copper does NOT kill bacteria or viruses. You're swimming in cootie-soup with a side of copper to avoid algae. Nothing being provided to kill cooties that cause diarrhea, for example.

Your skin sensitive offspring would probably do better with a salt water chlorine system as many folks with skin issues actually improve using salt.

Then why does my low level of chlorine not dissipate almost instantaneously if I have a "cootie-soup"? If I only have a little chlorine in the pool and it's full of bad stuff, it should be gone very quickly. But it isn't. I make sure there is always some chlorine in the pool and it doesn't disappear as quickly as it logically should if my pool is so bad. All I was doing was sharing my experience in response to someone's question. If you don't like my experience, well, it is what it is. Sorry. Actually the few times I've gotten more chlorine in the pool, my kids have complained about irritated eyes, etc.

So, logically, if copper inhibits growth, there is less to sanitize and you don't need as much chlorine. Maybe some folks missed the fact that I do still use chlorine, just a lot less.
Yes copper inhibits growth of algae, so does Chlorine. But there is not less to sanitize. Sanitation is killing bacteria, not killing algae. Eye and skin irritation is usually caused by CC's not high FC.

You are mostly driven by your son's skin reactions. Have you tried TFP method and have your kid swim in it? Maddie has a great point on Salt water system and you could even add Borates which a lot of users refer better skin conditions. Im an Eye Doctor and red eyes are due to PH and CC not chlorine in normal levels.
