Fresh Lake water

Please read "The "ABC's of Pool Water Chemistry" up in Pool School. CYA is an additive you put in your pool water so the chlorine doesn't get killed by UV from the sun so quickly.

You will not be able to follow what we teach unless you get one of the two test kits we suggest that will test for CYA and allow you to complete a SLAM. 5 gallons of chlorine in an 8.6k pool is wa-a-a-ay to harsh (that's about 40 ppm) without CYA and you may be bleaching your liner,

Good morning guys, from experience does anyone know how long it takes for lake water to filter Clean? Was brown on Saturday when put in now I can see the 3 step 4 step is the bottom, but still cloudy.
Back wash every 6 hours. Pump has been running since. Chlorine is still in slam mode (no sun just rain) PH should be normal at 7.6 and TA is at 80 as of yesterday. 16” 1HP waterway hi flow filter & pump. Any thoughts?

It will take a while. The best thing you can do is keep the FC at SLAM level for your CYA with your filter running 24/7 for the most part. If you know you will have time to vacuum in the morning you can leave the pump off over night and see if any of the stuff will settle on the bottom so you can vacuum it up and out of the pool by vacuuming to waste.

CYA stayed clear instructions said if clear it’s at 20 (or if I can see black dot ⚫️ from top) any thoughts thanks the pic is the chlorine.C7334A99-C193-4204-B5AA-423C3364344C.jpeg

Please rephrase our question. How exactly are you testing CYA? And why are you performing a SLAM?

In order to test properly for any type of SLAM or keep your pool balanced, a recommended test kit is a must. What I see here, assuming reagents and kit are good, is higher chlorine levels than 5 ppm, and nothing more. Your will need an extended kit to test properly, including combined chlorine.

The basic kit will just show the presence of chlorine in the water. You should be testing weekly to determine appropriate levels and make adjustments accordingly. Thank you.

I performed a slam because I had just added 8300k Gal of lake water in my pool on saturday. I’ve been Testing the chlorine and TA and The PH but I’ve been asked what was my CYA. I didn’t have a test kit for the CYA till this morning. when I use the pool math APP first thing it’s ask is what is my CYA when I test the chlorine in which I don’t know so I got a Blue Devil CYA test kit on Amazon. I tested as instructed and the results where 20 or Lower.

Awe yes, lake water, I remember now. Has the water cleared yet? The disappearing dot CYA test cant really tell between 0 and bellow 20ppm. I would think that lake water wouldn’t have any CYA but there’s no guarantee which is why I’d suggest creeping up on you target value slowly. According to PoolMath each 11oz dose will add 10ppm of CYA. Without a SWG you wanna be at about 30-40ppm.

Lake water does not carry CYA. I can only assume that the CYA kit you purchased it legit and will work fine, but here again at TFP we recommend only a few test kits. You are still missing other items in a kit, and will have a difficult time trying to clean up a pool, or keep a pool clean without understanding the basics of the TFP methodology. Thank you.
