Vegas OB! Just got plans back and need some feedback (pics included :) )

Hi Will! I'm playing catchup...
so exciting- you're almost done!!! Does it seem real yet?
The glass tile edging looks spectacular! What color did you end up choosing for plaster? I have a medium blue with beads and abalone shells. They actually show up very well in some of my pool pictures toward the end of my thread. The beads are beautiful, but the shells are SO SPARKLY!! I hope you are getting a BUNCH!

I can't wait to see it all finished! Btw- I really love your travertine!

We just decided on stonescapes tropics blue for a medium blue just like yours or at least I hope! We will also do beads and shells. So my question to you is what color beads did you put in and having your pool for over a year now would you change the color of the beads and if so to what?
And thank you for the compliment

Haha I'm glad you caught that. I was pretty sure she was going to say, "and I'm looking at you Will."
Yeah she was definitely talking to me and I felt a little guilty lol. So after you posted yours I thought I should get mine up for mama Suz
Looks amazing!! Can't wait to see this one finished!
Thanks! I'm looking forward to it as well.

Tony and Suz, I appreciate your kind words

I think I just gave Suz a name that will stick for a lifetime and I'm proud about it :)
Mama Suz!
I truly appreciate the people here on TFP and I hope I can pay back some of the knowledge that I have gained and help a few others
Now Kim I need you to post links again cause I didn't realize I talk to much and I can't find it through all these pages. I need to read on new pools and plaster/ mini pebble

My heart is SO happy! Look at all of my wonderful BLING! They did a great job! It is so purrfect! True artists!!!!

Know the 30 days of not swimming depends on your start up. Talk about all of this with your plaster warranty card holder.

You can and should talk to the plaster manufacture and see what they say as well.

Great question, Will. As with so many, no exact answer.

# of bags? - each installer has a different measurement for their bags. I think most charge by the bag which means cost usually determines how many bags a PO chooses to use. Talk to the plaster guys or call ahead to the plaster company. For me, you can't have too much sparkle!! Next lifetime I'll spring for more!

Mixing shells in the plaster or hand casting/sprinkling them after the plaster sprayed? It can be either, or both - again depends on the company and crew. I THINK my crew did both, but I know they also hand sprinkled. To me it makes sense to do both ways. You'll be sure to have plenty showing and not buried. And then if premixed, you will have some underneath if and when the sprinkled ones wear off.

Where to sprinkle them? Big debate here - bottom line is it's personal preference. Some swear by handcasting more on the shallow areas - they say the shells show up better so you get a bigger concentration for a bigger pop. For my pool, the shells show up beautifully even in the deep end. Maybe for virtually fully shaded pools it is better to concentrate on shallow places. I don't know. Some chose to have none on the walls so the flat areas take full advantage of the shells catching the sun. I love them sprinkled everywhere. Again for many, cost dictates getting the most bang for the buck so limiting areas might be a good idea.

**important! You have to watch the guys if you want to tell them where to hand cast the shells. I almost missed it. Talk to the foreman when they arrive and find out who will be doing the shells AND when.

I think you said you're going with nurseNini's finish... Check her thread - maybe she posted about it and pm her. She can give the best insight for her pool color.

Hope this helps!
Mama Suz

Oh! Oh! I meant to add.... I've heard of people getting extra shells thrown in from gratitude for the great care the PO gave the crew. Or if their pool was the second job of the day, the crew would throw in extra they had leftover. You may need to prompt them for that extra.

Suz thanks so much for the feedback, it makes perfect sense. Do the hand cast ones tend to wear off over time since they are just right on the top?

That's what I've heard, and it makes sense re the natural wear of plaster. The "shells" are really just flakes or a little thicker (at least mine were). Compared to the thicker and rounder pebbles, the plaster can't grip and hold the flakes as easily. I haven't read anything that says that, I'm just guessing why some shells may be lost over time. Also, don't shells in the ocean eventually dissolve, at least somewhat? Now I'm really presuming! Maybe install/materials methods are better now than when shells were first offered. After 2 years, I can't tell a difference in the look of my shells. And I haven't noticed any bits of shells in my robot filters or in my pool cartridge filters.

Sorry if I caused any alarm on that issue. I'm pretty sure my shells will outlive me, but if not, whatever years I get would be more than worth it. THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL! Everyone agrees, you can't imagine or appreciate how sparkly they are until you see them in person. Think silver glitter on steroids!

Update: Some shells would naturally be lost during the acid wash or acid bath.

Makes perfect sense and it didn't alarm me at all, I'm just happy you took the time to share your experiences with me.
I'm debating on seeing if my plasterer will exchange some bags of beads for shells. Going to ask him and see

I quickly skimmed nursenini's thread and found this. The extra she's referring to is for the shells and not beads. I didn't realize that color already comes with beads and shells.
"Close ups of LOTS of abalone!! I hope I don't lose a bunch in the acid wash! It's SO PRETTY!!! I'm SO glad I asked for extra! My plaster already comes with glass beads and abalone so I hadn't planned to ask for more, but adding the extra upped the WOW factor for sure!"

In case you want to see it quickly, I copied her quote from her thread page 73, post #1455 Hello from an excited Newbie in Bixby Oklahoma!! - Page 73

If you can have the best of both - extra beads and shells - go for it. You can't add them later! Lol!!! I know how much you want a deeper, more vibrant blue, so I hate to see you knock out extra beads. But trust me, you're gonna love it no matter what you decide!!!

Now..... breathe!

I just re read that again, thanks for the link! I have a text out now to check on price for albalone shells. My guy thinks it will take 2-3 5lb bags per batch with a total of 8 batches.... I'm a little nervous for the sticker shock... I will keep you updated
On another note I'm surprised we don't have a thread on alabone shells with all the questions swirling around. I may just start one to help the next nervous wreck lol. Things like hand casting or mixing in or putting on walls or shallow ends to your point Mama Suz...

Hi Will!

Love the "Mama Suz"!!!

Thank you for the very high compliment of trying to get close to my plaster color!

Being honest, the black pebbles make me think sometimes there's black algae. However, my numbers are good and water is clear, so, clearly, I'm paranoid. I blame it on the PTSD I have due to my traumatic build experience.
I think the black helps darken the blue color, though, so I wouldn't remove it because I wouldn't want my water lighter. In fact, I LOVE a darker finish (JaimieP's and twinkiesmom). Both of their pools caused me to really wish I had their color options. But, I do love my pool and thankfully it all came together.

The beads and abalone were part of the plaster mix I chose, as Suz mentioned. I did request extra abalone from my PB because other builds just ahead of mine really encouraged asked for extra because the sparkle and shine was so incredible. My PB didn't charge me for it, but he also was noncommittal on the amount of extra (if any) I would receive.

My pool was plastered twice. The first round, I was there and asked the installer about the extra shells. He assured me they had it. Then I watched him get on the phone and about 30 minutes later a man showed up from the pool company with a narrow long bag (maybe 4x8") of what was clearly crushed shells. I think maybe they hand cast some of those but only maybe 1/2 the bag was used, if that. When they were done, it looked sparkly but not as much as I had hoped. Then they had to replaster.
I made sure to remind the PB and the installer to include the extra abalone. This time, there was exponentially more shells. They show up really well in pictures and are visible all over the pool. There is a heavy concentration on all the benches, steps, tanning ledge and in the spa. They are visible on the wall and all over the floor. I think they did it heavier because they felt bad about having to replaster. There is a HUGE difference in the amount of shells the 2nd time vs the first. Again, I wasn't charged a dime for it, so I have no idea about the cost.

Moral of the story, get as much as you can!! BUT verify the quality of the shells with the PB or talk to other POs that he has plastered and used shells. Make sure they are not having trouble with their shells turning brown. It hasn't been an isdie for me, but others on here have had that problem.

It's gonna be GORGEOUS!!!

Thanks for the info Denise. I'm still waiting to hear back and hopefully the price won't crush my very essence and soul cause right now I'm committed either way. Funny part is my wife doesn't know so I guess I could always go deliver pizza to pay for my bling .
As for beads I'm going with a blue blend, however, that makes sense about the black making the water darker. I swear all this last minute stuff feels like it's gonna kill me and I know it's going to be alright but I want it perfect.
I really can't wait until 2 months from now when water is balanced and salt is in and I can just relax and laugh at myself for all this extra pressure. You would think I'm preparing a campaign for a presidential candidate with all the planning and verification of details
Here is a pic of the bead blend. Hopefully it can help someone else

Suz has talked of being glad she has her thread. She has gone back and reread it and found she had forgotten some of the details and such.

Here is hoping this is a one and done pool for you. I hope you and your family will be there forever and make many memories with it. This thread will be one to go back and read together as time goes by...........do you remember when..........

I don't know if I want to read my crazy commentary but I do hope it helps others seeing as I asked a TON of questions lol
I have learned so much and I wouldn't change anything
I will be in this house for at least 2 years . After building this pool I kinda wanna be like Joanne and mike and I wanna build another new house and do it even better this time :).
