Will this handrail placement be functional?

But the above hand rail is in the water and the OP shows one on the deck only. There are some really nice artistic hand rails these days- Some Examples- If you took the one on the second row, far right, and put it on the side instead of the head of the pool it would cover all needs, IMO.

Remember the person will be further down in the water so would not be able to reach the first rail. Saying that they can and will use the coping to hold and push from until they can reach the rail.

That curved one will fit all needs along with the coping.
