Which way should i point my returns??

My pool is inground rectangle 18x36..

The 2 returns on the same wall as the skimmer, w main drain in deep..

I can't seem to get it just right

Welcome to TFP!

Obviously ever situation is a little different. Generally they are most effective when aimed toward the surface, but not so much they make the water roll. Also it’s normal to aim them to the side some to encourage the water to rotate around the pool so the surface debris passes by the skimmer.

I almost always leave my floor drain turned off and do all my filtering from the skimmers. I just don't think the floor drain is very effective as a filter input (a lot of pools don't even have one).

I point my returns somewhat downward to help with water circulation. If I had your situation, I'd probably point both downward toward the deep end--say the 4 or 8 o'clock position.

I'm not going to defend it as the "best" approach, but it has worked well for me for many years.
