i have a 40x20 ft rectangle in ground pool. the depth of pool is 3ft to 8ft
on side wall of pool there are two skimmer boxes and two return jets same wall
to have proper circulation of the water which direction should the return jets be pointing
there also two returns jets on stairs. the first return on side wall is approx 6ft from stairs then approx 12ft to skimmer box. next return jet is about 12ft from first skimmer . then approx 6ft from the second skimmer box. the pool is opened by a pool company. ever year the returns are setup differently. would appreciate any InSite

Every pool is a little different so some experimentation is probably worth while.

Some forum members prefer a circular motion but depending on the type of return, this may be difficult to achieve. At best, the flow out of the return is probably around 45 deg rather than 90 deg although you can buy special returns for a 90 deg flow out of the return. I would try a clockwise flow for that pool.

For my pool, I aim the returns straight toward the opposite wall, slightly upwards. This way the debris hits the wall and moves along the wall to the skimmer. I find this to be more effective than trying to point the returns at 90 deg angles.

In your case, this may or may not work out given the skimmers are on the same side as the returns but it still may be worth a try.

For the stairs, I would point one of the returns (left) down toward the steps to help keep them clean and the other (right) up toward the surface in the direction of the first skimmer. This will minimize the interference between the two returns that are pointed at each other.

There are probably many other options as well and like I said before, experimentation is your best bet to find out what works best for your pool.

This is what a 90 degree return jet looks like:
