Lots of posts and preferences on this one. Water softener salt quite common. I use solar salt from the big box store (blue bag). Very pure and smaller pellets.

Always start with the PoolMath APP's "Effects of Adding". It's a great tool to help you with any dosage and chemical. Salt is one of those things that once you put it in, it doesn't just go away, so err on the side of caution. If your ideal salt level is 3,200 for example, then only go for a salt goal of say 2,800-3,000. You can always add more later, but you can't remove it.
Remember salt must be in the water dissolved for at least 24 hrs before you turn on the SWG.

See how much salt concentration in ppm your SWG recommends. Mine I think is fairly typical at 3100ppm. Starting from zero salt this would be about 260lbs of salt per 10,000 gallons.
Before adding salt, get a salt test kit, and see what you have now. You might be surprised how much salt you have in the existing water.
And you really need the test kit if you're installing a SWG.
