what are the more effective ways of removing rust spots?

The following shows the rust stain left by a submersible pump ... Any suggestions on the best way of getting rid of it? Many thanks!

Try putting ascorbic acid/vitamin C in a sock on it.

If that fails then you can try a spot acid treatment pouring muriatic acid down a pipe onto that area. That should be done carefully to not damage the plaster.

An acid treatment may work, but the best way is to use 80 grit wet&dry sandpaper. Sanding will leave the plaster smooth.

Thank you for sharing! I have decided to repaint the pool. So, need to prep the surface anyway. I will keep this in mind.
