Time for a new Filter??? Need your input!

Pool is 20 years old, still has the OG filter and I believe it's time for a new one.

- Current is a Pentair FNS Plus 60 sq ft, DE filter
- Previous owner replaced some brass screws with hardware store wing nuts so those are rusting
- Several of the filters have holes in them so I'm ~$100 bucks in anyway
- I think I have a crack around the drain hole when it one time blew off because I let pressure get too high (digging for a french drain was being done and I stupidly left the pump running) - I replaced the drain plug but it still leaks a bit

Anyway, wondering if I can switch to a Quad DE filter for ease of maintenance or stick to a like-for-like replacement.

I do not want to modify any plumbing.

Any other options out there? Any considerations I am missing?

You cannot swap the filters without changing plumbing. The Quad is plumbed like a sand filter, so the in and out ports are reversed from your current filter.

The Quad is plumbed like a cartridge filter, which it is.

Get a FNS60 for a drop in replacement.

The new Pentair DE filter is nearly a drop in replacement. I did this a couple of years ago and the then new DE filter inlet and outlet spacing was the same but they were both about an 1” lower on the body of the filter when measured from the ground to the centerline of teh inlet and outlet fittings. So I had to put flat pavers down to set the DE filter on which raised the new DE filter up to align to the multiport plumbing. Once I did that - it all line up great. The side benefit was that it also made access to the drain plug easier when I did the filter cleaning.

If I was to do it again - I would switch to a cartridge filter and spend time redoing the plumbing.

Both can be true. For clarity for future readers, DE/FNS filters are inlet on the bottom and outlet on the top. The Quad DE/Cartridge filters and Sand filters are inlet on the top and outlet on the bottom.

In any case, if you use any type of valve, it must match the filter.

@ajw22 gave you the best advice. FNS60 is drop in replacement, no plumbing required.

Thanks all. I patched her up, got a racheting wrench to tighten the drain plug (never taking that off again ever) and 2 new filter panels. Good as new. Maybe a new filter in the next few years but not yet.
