They are actually just ball pit balls that I got at Walmart. I paid $13 for a hundred of them and plan to add more over time... I do find that bugs like to congregate around them if I leave them in over night so I always take them out at night and I have a big mesh bag to put them in. We like to take them on to one side of the pool and throw them at the raft and see who can get all of theirs on the raft first. It's a lot harder than it sounds.

There is one giant rubber duck in there that used to be my chlorinator but now that I don't use chlorine tablets any longer I put glass marbles down in his bottom half to keeping balance so that he'll float correctly because we've gotten kind of used to him and we like you his name is 2quack
I am graduating to a new post! getting ready to start asking questions about a new pump and maybe an swg...watch for me in some other thread...I am out of the "just getting started" mode and ready to get serious about the control of my pool! thanks all!
ok, I do have another question that should go here I think...my cya is at 50, but I am losing so much chlorine daily that I am going thru around 80-96 oz per day right now. is that due to the heat we had for the last week or two? it was getting pretty hot out... the heat did go down a bit yesterday and I only used 66 oz) or do I need to double check my cya and make sure what it is and maybe raise it?
I have been raising my FC to 9 each evening and dropping back down to about 3.5 by the next evening (last night it was dropped down only to 4.5, which is why I am relating this all to the heat), with no overnight loss of FC, no CC, and clear water. I like this method but until I can make the switch to an SWG possibly, am I going to continue using this much liq chlorine all the time? at 2.50 a gallon (on sale), that is doable, but at almost 4.00 a gal (not on sale), that gets pretty expensive, pretty quick.
also, is it going to hurt anything if I am raising my fc that high on a daily basis? I get the impression from the cya chart that I should expect a loss of around 2 fc per day? but I am losing quite a bit more than that...I don't want to damage my liner
5.5 FC loss per day is high. I would definitely recheck CYA. Have you had lots and lots of rain in the past couple weeks? How often do you vacuum to waste? There is no auto-fill on this pool is there?
We did have a couple of days a few weeks back with quite a bit of rain, but mostly it seems to be a result of high heat based on how consistent this loss is. Since I need to do the cya test in full sun, I will likely have to wait until at least Friday if not Saturday to do it properly to verify the numbers
... no to the auto fill
... I do not have a sand filter but I vacuum weekly, with daily touch up by battery operated vacuum
Regarding your comment about the liner, no need to worry. You're well within what it's designed for. You could keep it at shock level and also be fine.
Yep, it could be that your CYA is low. If I remember right, the pool gets a lot of sun. Could also be weak bleach, or much higher swim-time/bather-load than average.
Great to see that you're detecting the higher than average FC use and on top of it and working through it!
The pool does get all day sun with no shade to speak of other than when I put up my pretty umbrellas so that I'll have a little spot of shade for my red headed self. I started using the tfp way of doing things right when my brother and sister-in-law showed up so we had between 2 and 4 people in the pool most days and for a good amount of hours each day and we're just now getting back down to just the two of us so now that we're coming into more normal conditions for what we will be most of the time I will start looking at the individual components of my pool chemistry and making sure that I am where I need to be and the results I'm seeing are what are expected for the circumstances
My pH seems to have risen a bit since the last time I checked. When I input that information into pool math it tells me to add 19 ounces of muriatic acid, but it is going with the default of 100 for my TA level. Should I go ahead and just put in the 19 ounces of muriatic acid or do I need to get an accurate ta reading and input that to determine how much muriatic acid I need?
I think I'm going to make a chart that I can start keeping my numbers on so that I can start seeing the patterns in all of this. And I think I will include things like rainfall and temperature. I'm a little bit of a numbers nerd and I see patterns in numbers that most people miss so I think this could be a fun exercise for me ( I am an accounting analyst and office manager by day )

I read on the pool chemistry section I believe that you should not adjust your total alkalinity just to achieve a certain number unless you're having problems in other areas as a result of that alkalinity number being high. Any thoughts on that from you guys? Should I figure out that total alkalinity number and then start adjusting it down to what it should be because if I remember right it was pretty high
