Hi Folks, I’m a long-time Lurker that’s been running my pool for 25 years using old-school methods. Finally trying to drag myself - kicking and screaming - into the 21st century.

I still have a lot to learn before pulling the trigger on equipment upgrades, but first of all, it’s well-past time to ditch the chlorine tab floaters. It seems a SWCG is the best option for me. I spent time researching SWCG options, both on this site as well as netsurfing the various brands and resellers. At this point, I’m leaning toward the CircuPool RJ-60 Plus.

I’ve read several posts recommending that a properly sized SWCG should have a pool-size-rating that is a minimum of 2X times the size of the pool. My pool is 35K gal. This suggests I should be looking for a SWCG with a minimum rating of 70K gal. This significantly limits my choice of residential-class systems, possibly kicking me up into the commercial realm. Does this 2X suggestion apply regardless of pool size?

The RJ-60 Plus is specified for a 60K gal pool with a chlorine generation rating of 3.1 lbs/hr. Would I be ill advised to select this RJ-60 Plus system?

I'm hoping the answer, as Hector Barbossa might say, is that this unwritten rule is actually more of a guideline!

The purpose of the 2x rating is to provide some flexibility in running the SWCG because if it is sized for 1x, it would require to run the SWCG at 100% output to meet the desired FC output for some areas. Unfortunately the residential limit on reputable SWCGs is 60k gals.
There has been at least one thread where a member ran 2 SWCGs to meet the requirements.

I have an RJ-60+ 29K gallon pool. I have a solar cover and run my CYA at 80. I run my cell 24/7 at 10-15%.

You are a higher latitude (lower demand), higher elevation 2500' (higher demand), and likely get more sun than Ohio. Probably not far off.

The thing is a beast. I would get the RJ and try it. In a 35K pool, running 95% (don't run 100% for 24/7, not good for cell), running 24/7, it will create 10FC. More than enough. I would be surprised if you are not delighted. If not, you can always add a cell later, but I don't think you will need to.

I would not hesitate to put an RJ-60+ on your pool. Don't look back.

I run a Pentair IC60 in my 35K pool. It runs at around 45% 24/7 and gives me 3ppm of FC which works fine with CYA of 70.

Keep your CYA between 60 - 80 and a 60K SWG will work fine for you.

I have an IC60 on 34k gallons about as north as you. 60% runtime is plenty and only needed for the scorcher weeks. Most of the season is run at 40% and the extended season is 20% or less. Either the IC60 (needed if you have automation to match the Pentair equipment, or just because) or the RJ60+ (if not) will do you right.
