Howdy,

After much complaining by the family, I'm going to replace our current pentair single speed pump with a variable speed one. Currently the pump is a SuperFlo 1.1HP unit controlled by a relay in the intellicenter box (and is 120V, new pump is 230V, which is not a problem as the intellicenter has a load center and plenty of open breaker slots).

The pool is about 13K gallons, no spa, with 4 fountains in the splash deck, a skimmer and two floor returns and a few jets and water shelf on the steps.

Was hoping to ask a few questions:
1) Will be using the RS485 connection from the intellicenter to the pump. Because of the serial connection, does that suggest running the pump directly to the breaker and removing the existing intellicenter controlled relay for the pump (given control will be over serial)?

2) Trying to decide between which pump - there seem to be 3 that are all VERY similar (in my inexperienced reading): the Intelliflo 3 VSF, the Intelliflo VS+SVRS and what seem to maybe be an earlier Intelliflo (no "3" or "SVRS").

3) My current pump is a 1.1HP SuperFlo pump w/2" PVC lines. I'm thinking of going to 3HP for a few reasons including running at lower speed and being able to really make the fountains in the splash deck stand out (when desired). From what I'm reading, this should be OK, but wanted to see if anyone had any caution/concerns.

I have a pretty simple pool setup and am primarily looking to do this to reduce sound/noise and secondarily to reduce power consumption. Is there any strong argument about which one of these pumps is better?

I was sort of leaning toward the Intelliflo3 VSF, just because it seemed "simple", but the connections do seem taller than my current pump (not that it's a deal breaker, of course), but honestly, am not sure what one offers over the other in a simple case like mine. I expect all would do the job, but I cannot see a difference that would drive picking one over the other.

Appreciate any thoughts (especially sorting why/what each pump offers compared to others).

Thanks in advance!!

Gerry,

The reason to not get the SVRS option is that they will shut off when the pump just 'thinks' there is any surge in the suction line.. the sensitivity can't be adjusted, so depending on your plumbing, it will shut off just because you turned off the filter air vent valve a little too quickly, or you move a Jandy valve too quickly.. It will make your pool life a nightmare... I know as I have one... Sigh!!!

I have worked out a process that makes things better for me, but I would never recommend any pump with the SVRS option, as it is an obsolete idea, and no longer needed on pools that have raised drain covers..

Thanks,

Jim R.

Gerry,

The larger the VS pump and the larger the filter, the better it is... This allows you to run at a lower RPM and still move a lot of water.

I never recommend buying a small (1.5 HP) VS pump.

I run my 3 HP VS pump, 24/7/365, mostly at 1200 RPM... this costs me less than $20 bucks a month. My pump is at least 10 years old. The IntelliFlo3 is way more energy efficient than my older pump.

Sound wise, when I first got it, I would often have to touch it, just to make sure it was actually running..

Thanks,

Jim R.

Easier wiring is to move the pump wires from the LOAD screws to the LINE screws of the filter/pump relay to give it constant power.

You probably have other devices, such as your SWG, connected to the filter/pump relay and you cannot connect multiple wires directly to most circuit breaker.

2) Trying to decide between which pump - there seem to be 3 that are all VERY similar (in my inexperienced reading): the Intelliflo 3 VSF, the Intelliflo VS+SVRS and what seem to maybe be an earlier Intelliflo (no "3" or "SVRS").

Intelliflo3 and I recommend you get the 011077 model with the touchscreen so that you do not require your phone and app to control the pump in SERVICE mode or when you have a problem with the IntelliCenter.

Never get a SVRS pump.

3HP pump will be fine.
