So glad I didn't give up!!! TFP, all the way!

Re: Should I just give up? Can

The steps were in the shed all clean and fresh, they really took care of the equipment.
That's a heck of a thing to leave in a pool! Good thing they told you about it! I haven't read back through the whole thread, but have you removed the steps or are they still in the pool? They have little nooks and crannies where algae can hide. I like to pull mine and clean them with a bleach solution to get rid of any hidden algae.

Re: Should I just give up? Can

I wonder if the pole fell in and they couldn't get it so they left it? My telescopic pole fell in 2 times this year because of wind (I leave it in all year because of mud and I have no deck yet). If it weren't for the hose being attached, I'd have to get in to get it!

They tell me the kids was using it to fish out a lizard and lost both ... :(

Re: Should I just give up? Can

Slamming since Sunday, I thought the water would be more clear by now. FC maintained at 20 all week, CC down to 1.5 .... still real cloudy. What to do to help speed things along? We replaced the sand in our filter last week also, will that slow things down? I want to see the bottom of my pool!!!

Re: Should I just give up? Can

Wendy, I too was getting impatient last week as I had my pool built this past fall and immediately covered for the winter without ever getting to use it. I opened it up this year to clear water, but a good bit of mud on the bottom from the backfill when it was built. The pool had never been treated with any chemicals and while attempting to get the mud out of the pool, the water quickly became pretty gross. Aside from the brown muddy look, when things would settle, it was beginning to get a hint of green to it. So I added the CYA and began SLAMming. Even with a slight tint of green, it still took me a week of maintaining my elevated FC for the water to clear up again. I started to become skeptical 4 days into the SLAM because I didn't feel the water was that dirty to begin with so why was this taking so long. A few people recommended adding a small amount of DE to my sand filter and brushing (I was also skeptical about brushing as well and was only brushing here and there) as much as possible. Low and behold, the DE and brushing 2 - 3 times a day (or as often as I had a chance) while SLAMming dramatically sped things up for me and I saw a complete turn around in 2 or 3 days. Now my water is clear, my CC's are 0 and I passed an OCLT two nights ago. Just keep doing what you are doing, these guys know what they're talking about. Having the patience was the hardest part for me.

Re: Should I just give up? Can

Wendy it will take a little longer. Just think, you JUST now found/took out the pole with all kinds of yuck in it. I would be brushing at least twice a day so it is mixing with the water to be killed by the bleach.

The DE will be a good idea BUT know that it can work "too good" as in you pressure may go up fast as it does it's work. Better to use it only when you can be there to see what happens.

You CAN do it!

Re: Should I just give up? Can

Any pics you can add? It's going to come down to your filter filtering it all out once you kill off the CC's by SLAM'ing it. As stated previously, it didn't turn green in a week, it's not going to clear in a week. You need more POP. :D

Re: Should I just give up? Can

Wendy,
I noticed in your signature you mention a "frog chlorinator" and also saw your CYA reading jumping around a bit, if that frog is active it will slowly drive up your CYA and have you chasing your tail with your SLAM. Do a search at the top of the forum about your frog, do your homework and you will probably want to get rid of it in short order. Also, I will attest to the method you are being advised to use, it works, it just requires patience.

Re: Should I just give up? Can

Progress! CC way down, .5 or .75 as it reads tonight, will test again in the morning. I have added lots of Clorox keeping the SLAM up for 7 days now, the results are amazing! If should only be days now before the stairs and I get in the pool. I was wondering about the giant tablets in that frog thing, was hoping to rid myself of them and their expense. BBB all the way for us from now on!!!

Good for you! That BBQ sound delish!

Re: Should I just give up? Can

Too much water won't hurt anything. The only issue you may run into is that stuff floating on the top won't go into the skimmer to be filtered out. It's a personal call......myself, I'd drain some.

Re: Should I just give up? Can

I've already had to dump some. I'll probably have to do more tomorrow too. It just won't skim the top of the water.
