So glad I didn't give up!!! TFP, all the way!

Re: Should I just give up? Can

You'll never step foot in another pool store unless you want a really expensive floaty with a drink holder.

Re: Should I just give up? Can

You will NEVER have to go go to the pool store again! Well if they are having a great sell on pool toys maybe but that is all!

You CAN do this! Once it is done it will be SO easy AND cheap! SLAM!!!! (bleach that is not the adult drink LOL)

Keep the pics coming!

Re: Should I just give up? Can

I have some new numbers this morning, I think I over slammed and have to wait a bit longer to add more chlorine. I have CYA 58, FC 17, CC 2 ... the pool is looking more clear, I can see down about 2 feet or maybe a little more. I am running out of R-0013 and wonder if I should order more to complete this slam.

Re: Should I just give up? Can

R-0013 is the cyanuric acid (CYA) reagent. CYA should be rather stable unless there is a significant water replacement, so I wouldn't bother testing it during the SLAM. Just make sure you have enough of the FAS-DPD chlorine testing reagents (R-0870-the powder, R-0871, and R-0003).

I must be over testing, I am ready to swim! I did order some more, better safe than sorry. I can see deeper into the water and hope to be swimming soon!

Re: Should I just give up? Can

Sounding better! You can slow down on the full battery of test. For now just watch Ph and FC/CC using the powder and drops. That bottle of R-0013 should have lasted all summer! CYA, calcium, TA only need to be checked weekly or longer once the pool is in shape.

Post of pictures.

Re: Should I just give up? Can

You're making good progress :goodjob:. Since your CC's are still at 2 ppm, keep the SLAM going until CC is 0.5 or lower. During the SLAM, remember to aim for an FC of 20 ppm (given your pool's CYA of 50).

Re: Should I just give up? Can

It's all starting to click, thanks for the information and guidance! I received our test kit just a week ago, after the first two days I was so confused. But, with your help I kept going and now it seem to be working! I will keep up the slam and get the CC down to .5 .... when I reach that level can I jump in the water? Will it be safe to swim in?

Re: Should I just give up? Can

Safe to swim up to shock level. Frankly several of us have gone higher - not an issue unless you are concerned about suit fading but just shower after if your worried about possible skin reaction.

Re: Should I just give up? Can

Once you finish with slam you can run a full battery of tests - you will want to make sure that your pH is good, and let your Chlorine start falling to maintenance levels ... if the pH is good and the chlorine is below slam level then it is good to swim! The pH test is invalid while slamming, so you need to finish slam first!

Re: Should I just give up? Can

For now there's a good bit of yucky stuff in the water that I'd think twice about swimming. Add to that all the dirt/sweat/urine and any other yucky things on your body will consume your chlorine setting your slam progress back a bit. A few things to help you out however......
  • Brush and brush often.
  • Brush the heck in all the cracks around the skimmers, steps, ladders, lights. Anywhere water touches can hide algae which is consuming your chlorine.
  • Enjoy your learning. In a few more days your pool will be clean of any nasty stuff and the envy of the neighborhood. You'll have the training to maintain it for far less than before. You'll own a brand new pool.

Can you post a photo of the pool?

Re: Should I just give up? Can

Keep going Wendy. I don't swim or let people swim if the pool is being SLAM'ed. If the pool looks sick, I close it but I haven't had a sickly looking pool in a very long time. Please post pics.

Re: Should I just give up? Can

We aren't putting the steps in the pool until it clears up and the levels are acceptable! The FC is being maintained and the CC is dropping!
