Slip fit return jet install

Hi, I am looking to replace my old eyeball slip fit jet returns. I bought the replacements. These have a bump on the shaft. I tried pushing in the part to the open PVC pipe but cannot seem to get the “bump” to go in. Any tricks?

Also, can straight pipes be changed to threaded after construction?

I have not heard of anyone changing slip to threaded.

Not without chiseling out around the pipe 3" deep, cutting 1.5" off, and attaching a slip x fpth coupling. Then repairing the concrete and plaster. I wouldn't recommend it.

If the old ones didnt have collars those likely wont fit. Could try water soluble lube to get them to go or sand them down

These worked well in my spa. 1 1/2" ID pipe flush with the surface of the wall. Pool builder never installed eyeballs.
