SLAM Issue

Thoughts on deep cleaning the filter? As it correlates to anything that keeps showing up? I know filtration and chemistry are two distinct concepts.

Not sure what to say also. Just failed OCLT. Went from 22.5 to 20. Did two tests this am. Got 20 and 19.

I ran bubbler on half open last night to help with circulation. I’m growing so frustrated. Wife is suggesting go to a pool store ….

Maybe it's time for the mustard algae 24 hours at 60% of the CYA. Theoretically if the normal slam doesn't kill off the mustard alage, you may be seeing remnants that need the full dose.

Most see no traces of anything with a proper slam first, but maybe you're the exception. You've certainly put the effort in.

A 2 ppm loss with FC of 22 can be within the margin of error. That would be a pass if your FC was 8.

I would let the SLAM be over and run your FC a few ppm over the CYA 60 range for a while.

I do get that.

I have been doing several tests in the evening. I usually like to make sure my #s are consistent.

One test last night showed a CC of 1.0. The other tests showed nothing on CC. So I figured it was a blip.

That makes me think I’ve got something lingering, as I still am seeing gunk.

Got the robot in for first time in about 7 weeks. Brand new filters in it. Haven’t seen any gunk today as bubbler has been running. Hope I’m in the clear. At any rate - I appreciate all of the help everyone. Seven weeks ago I was dumping Clorox algaecide in left and right along with yellow gone. I feel my pool knowledge has advanced light years.IMG_3208.jpeg

Still going well. Laddering FC down and nothing visible last two days. Got down to 13 with full sunshine today. I ran SWG a little hard as sun went down, it bumped up slightly. So that’s a good sign to me. I also slept in this Am for the first time in weeks. It felt fantastic. Have been OCLT testing for about 5-6 weeks.

Will check CYA in AM. Probably in 40 range at present. Since I plan to use my auto cover a good chunk of the day, I'm going to consider experimenting with 50 CYA and try to run in the 7.5-10 range. That will take some practice for me. Anything over 10 with cover on (for extended periods) seems like it may invite problems for the cover from what little I’ve read about the cover and FC levels. Any experience on that issue is appreciated.

Folks, just want to update:

Have SWG dialed in at 30. My CYA is 60. I’m floating between 13-17 FC during day with cover wide open and full sunshine. Pool is absolutely spotless! Have been good for about 10 days at this point I’d say. Thank you all for helping. I am trying to ladder down to the 11-15 FC range. I feel I can safely use auto cover even at that range. Plan on dialing salt down with cover on also.

I’m endeavoring to run slightly hotter and to give myself a cushion. I don’t want to fall below 9 in any circumstance. Maybe that’s overkill.

Guys, I’m back. Opened this year, FC was around 15-16. My CYA is at 70.

Things have been fine until the last couple of weeks. We had landscaping done, spring is in full bloom, and to break it down gently - I think pollen and dirt have gotten into the pool via our auto cover.

I’ve been noticing the same crud I dealt with last summer coming back but here’s the kicker - it seems to only show up after we’ve closed the auto cover. I’ve vacuumed it to a skim sock - it is pretty much the same stuff as last year when I had the month long SLAM.

I had the cover closed for 3 days. The SWG ran at 50% the entire time. My FC stayed basically right at 15 (may have even gone down some) and the pool was a dirty mess. We have been dealing with the horrible rains here in KY also. So there was zero sunshine on the pool during that time. The fact that the FC didn’t go up at all was my clue. I’ve just been feeling like my #s haven’t been reflective of how I’ve been running the SWG.

I did the OCLT last night. Went from 20.00 FC to 19 FC. And I got 1.0 CC this am. So, I plan to Slam immediately.

I’ve kept my FC high the entire time, above what I consider the “mustard minimum” level would be. I routinely reference the standard chart.

Any ideas on how I got back here? I really think it’s the auto cover. We’ve had a hard time keeping it just clean as a whistle. We did get a fair amount of dirt in the pool. Otherwise, we’ve done a good job keeping the pool clean.

The cover vault as it's called probably has a buildup of foliage that is partially earth now. It needs to get cleaned out when the pool is in the closed position so you'd have maximum room to do the house cleaning.

Started the SLAM tonight. Six bottles of 10% and I’m at 36.5 FC. I feel a whole heck of a lot better about this one compared to last summer. Will work on the cover from here on out. Might take a few days to find the right amount of free time.

Is there any guide on what an acceptable overnight loss is if FC is over 30 with a 70 CYA? I seem to recall someone mentioning some higher losses are acceptable if the FC is higher but I don't want to place bad info out there. Looking for any guidance. I had a loss from 36 to 32 last night so I am not considering that a pass of course.

During the day FC burns off as a %, so you'll see more loss at 36 than at 8. But even then, did you really make 78 perfect drops ? Was the sample size dead on at 10 ml ? The higher the FC, the more room for human error with both.

When folks see **no other signs** than an overnight loss after a couple of attempts, we usually tell them to let it fall to target range and try the OCLT there.
