Pump cartridge filters keep cracking

Hi all! Had my first above ground pool (salt water system, cartridge filter) installed last year, went trouble free all year. Opened / closed it without issues.

This year I opened my pool, no problems. After about 3 weeks decided to remove the filter to clean it. It had cracked in half. I figured, hey I know the last typical 1 to 2 years no biggie I’ll just by a new one (mind you last year I only removed it once in three months to clean it - no cracks or deformation).

Long storey short, I am now on my 4 cartridge, all have cracked after about two weeks. The only thing that has changed with my set up is that I installed a heater and about 6ft of new plumbing.

Welcome to the forum.
The cartridges you show are amazing clean on the outside but appear dirty on the inside. I would suggest you check the inlet and outlet piping on the filter to be sure they are not mis aligned.

Thank you for the quick reply! Could you elaborate? I’m sorry, I understand what misaligned means but in regards to how it’s connect to the filter/pump? Based on the photo of the setup, do you see something that doesn’t make sense? Thanks again.

Look at your filter housing. Are the lines from the pump and to the heater installed incorrectly? Does the heater have Inlet and Outlet written on it near the connections? The filters appear that the water is entering the inside and coming out the outside. That is opposite of how they should operate.

Got it! I will check that when I get home and report back. Thanks so much for the information!

The center of the cartridge sits on the center part.

The water comes in and goes through the outside of the cartridge to the inside and then out the center hole.

The way it is now, water is pushing into the inside of the cartridges and going backwards, which is causing the cartridges to crack.
