Please Help-Green, Hazy Water and Zero Free Chlorine since 5/18/15 =-(

I have not taken apart this filter. We moved here in Dec and my husband was home when the pool was opened in May so I didn't see anything. The backwash lets the water run out through a hose and it bubbles up in the back of the yard - like a little fountain, we were shocked. The hose is hidden underground. It is a sand filter, and we have never had a sand filter. I looked on u-tube how to use this system. This is the site I found that has our exact filter. How to Use a Multiport Valve on a Sand Filter - I haven't had time to watch the entire thing though. Our old pool we had was chlorine for just 2 seasons and then we switched to salt b/c we had so many issues with chlorine and no issues with salt. It was a DE filter and I understood how to backwash it to change out the DE. This system with the pool now, I never had a multi-valve - and before (old pool) we had to take the filter apart and hose out the cartridges. Not sure how this system works though.
Thanks
Jen

Now a sand filter is something I can help you with as I have one! I am going to start at step one just to make sure I do not miss something.

-Never move your filter multiport without turning off the pump first.

-Always move the multiport in one direction-I go clockwise but it really does not matter so that it is the same way every time.

-When you do a backwash do it until the water coming out is clear or if you have a looking glass until it runs clear. If nothing else run it for 4 mins.

-After you backwash do a rinse. That puts the sand back where it belongs. Do the rinse for 3 bursts of 1 min. each.

-Turn it to filter and let it run for a min or two to settle everything.

Now for taking apart your filter. Do you have unions you can take apart leading the the filter? These allow you to separate the pvc pipes leading to the filter. If not you will need to put some in. If so good.

When you have about a hour of time that you can get wet you need to open your filter and see what it looks like inside. The sand should be loose and "soft". It should move freely and not have any hard clumps. You can even put a hose down into the sand gently to rinse it out some.

This will give you something to do while we are waiting for your FC to come down. (Not like you need anything else to do with work and kids!)

Here is a link with pictures of how a sand filter works. You do not have to watch the video until you have time. The pictures have arrows to show you everything.

Thank you Kim! I had no idea that is how you work this filter. I think there is a lot of sand in the pool - guessing that is from the filter? Not sure how it got from filter to pool though. The person who had this house and put in the pool, had a lot of "top notch" things that the pool company sold him on he told me - like a fiberoptic light (which I don't know how to turn on), another "port" if you will, that looks like a skimmer but it isn't. It's for if there is a problem under the pool, that is how they'd access it. He also said that he has the filter that is purposely too big for this pool. I'm trying to upload a photo to show you the pump. He said the pool also self levels itself. I'm not sure how to take it apart but I can look at it in the daylight and see. I'll look at your article. Thank you thank you.

I'd like to take a second and try to get some key data sorted.......

JenMazz,
You have made the comments that at one point you added over 27 gallons of bleach to your pool. That's a TON of chlorine for an 11k gallon pool. I'd like to see about where you are FC wise, as you could be toying with damaging your pool. Please do a FC test using the K1000 (little blue box in the TF100 kit) and take as clear of a photo of it as you can. Report back ASAP with the description of what you see.

Jen to post a photo. Upload the pictures to photobucket. When you open the image there will be a code that says IMG. Copy the whole code and paste it here. Each picture has its own IMG code so you will just have to copy each link separately to paste them all.

Leebo has requested pic. Please do this if you can.

Thank you. In the AM, I will get that test kit and test it and take photo of pool and post. It just stormed here last night - hopefully that is helpful? (adding rain water to help dilute?) Also, not that it makes too much difference? - I had added 12 bottles (121 fluid oz per bottle) one day and then 12 next day and then 3 the next. I didn't add it directly to skimmer, I did it around pool edges. Thank you and I will check-in in the AM.

We will take it one thing at a time. Right now lets get you learning how to take care of the filter. Help me remember to work on the self leveling part later.

Of course all of that while we are waiting for you FC to go down.

Please do use photobucket to post pics for Leebo.

Thanks for the photos Jen. Do you have a vacuume you could get the stuff on the bottom vacuumed up?

Will be watching for you to post the picture of your test results in the blue box. Just do the. Chlorine test and post the pic. Don't worry about PH test.

I can't tell for sure if this is an orange or brownish. Do you see things "floating" in the water?? Either way your FC level is REALLY high. If it's orange I'd guess your FC levels are between 15-30 where brown will ballpark you over 30. These MUST come down to avoid damage to your pool. What is your current CYA level? This will help us determine just how aggressive you need to be to lower these levels.

I can't test for the CYA again b/c I am out of the R0013 and the store said they don't sell that one. I can take them a sample and they can test the CYA. Last I did the CYA, the other day, it was 80 ppm. I did order the R0013 online from Amazon but it won't get here until end of week.
Thanks,
Jen

PS: I can vacuum the pool - only problem is - we can't figure out how to properly set the valves to have it properly suck enough. We can get it to suck, just not forceful though. I think we don't have a setting correct - it's all a guessing game.

I don't see anything floating in the water. Just the sand at the bottom.

I'm still concerned about the current results. On 6/7 you posted your CYA levels were at 40ppm, which would put your Shock level around 16ppm. Am I correct in taking this was your last reading using YOUR own K2006 test kit? If so, that's the result I'd like to work with for now. If you've done another test using your K2006, please post back.

At a CYA level of 40 you are almost double the Shock Level for your pool. If I were in your shoes I would use a Chlorine Reducer to lower your levels ASAP. From there wait until you get a full set of test results from your personal kit. By "blindly" adding chemicals to your pool you are wasting money and are going to damage your surface. I know I sound rude, but I am only concerned about the risks in damaging your pool.

Thank you, I don't take it as being rude, at all. I NEED the help and GREATLY appreciate it. I messed up when I read the CYA level I realized. When I stated it was at 18 - that was the water line mark were it read (but there was not a ppm to the right of the 18)

When it went to 40 - I again made a mistake and was reading the water mark and not the # to the right. So I know now that it is at 80 for CYA. I'm very sorry - I understand it now and can report properly.

How much chlorine reducer should I add?
