Please Help-Green, Hazy Water and Zero Free Chlorine since 5/18/15 =-(

Jen,

I'd like to start off by saying a quick suggestion......take a deep breath. :) It's only water. It will be OK, I promise you! If you will, can you PM me your phone number so that I can give you a few tips quickly as opposed to typing them out. They're very basic ones.....I promise. :)

WOW! Talk about the personal touch! :whoot:

Jen - very sorry to hear of your troubles and totally feel your stress.

If you feel you can't wait for the reagent, I can bring you some of mine. I live about 80 minutes from you; and I could run it up to you tonight after traffic dies down. It would be a break from brushing my pool.....

Let me know if you're desperate for it or if the amazon order is timely enough for you. Wish I could be of more help.

Hang in there,
Chris

I did not think this forum could get any better! OH MY! That is SO sweet!

Pool is almost filled up! Now, there is still this brown stuff that is at the bottom of the pool. See photos. It is not sand as I originally thought. I don't know what it is. Is it mustard algae? I brushed the pool throughout the night and the brown stuff re-appeared in the SAME spots - I know this 100% b/c even in the shallow end, you will see in the photo, there is one spot that doesn't have it. Same pattern. LMK what you think. Here are the photos.

BTW, I did find out through reading that "The other unique thing about low calcium is that it can make the water have a slight green tint to it. We usually see this in pools where the calcium level is below 100ppm. The water will be clear, it just will have a green tint and shocking does not clear the green tint." This is what happened when the pool was first opened - it was clear but a tint of green (plus a slight odor of some sort). Then I added calcium hardness like the pool store said b/c Calcium level was at zero......and shock b/c free & total Cl were zero - then green right away (like w/in 20 min)

Thank you!!!!

There's multiple things it "could" be, however Slamming the pool is our starting point for now. If you can, use your K2006 and post these results,

FC
CC
pH
CH
TA
CYA

I understand you likely won't be able to post your CYA level just yet, but post as soon as you can. Once we have all these results we'll get you started.

Okay, here are photos and the counts.... (I'm getting excited b/c I see clear water)
Total Alk: 150 ppm (15 drops to turn red)
Calcium Hardness - at 35 drops was a purple/blue - at 40 drops it was more blue - 400 ppm
PH: 7.2
Chlorine - can't do yet - waiting on 0871 reagent
But Cl with the blue box test kit is still orange
CYA- can't do yet - waiting on 0013 reagent

Also, the hose water - it moves the brown stuff with great ease - hence the spot under the hose being clear - SO, where the hose was during the night, caused the pattern in the shallow end. And with all the vacuuming & backwashing previously still didn't get it out of pool.

if you can, try to pickup some of the brownish stuff. What does it feel like?

This photo is very promising as we can now clearly see the bottom of the pool.

One suggestion to try is to use either a skimmer sock, or pantyhose to try to catch whatever that is floating in the water. I'm still holding off making any more suggestions at this point until we can get another solid CYA and FC result from you kit. You've got enough chlorine in the water it appears to hold off any further algae outbreaks so for now I'd just brush and vacuum as much as you can.

My 0013 came today! Testing now for CYA
CYA is 50 ppm

Tested multiple times. Came up w/50 ppm. I bought a quart of the reagent - won't run out!

The FC reagent 0871 is supposed to arrive Friday before 8 pm EST. So that is the only thing I can't test for yet.

I don't want to lose any days waiting till Friday night for that reagent - do we have enough info to move forward? LMK your thoughts.

With the pantyhose, do you put anything in it or just put one in the skimmer?

I know, I am soooooo anxious to see a crystal clear pool and swim with the family.
Thank you

Hi Jen,

My wife and I can run the reagent up to you now if you'd like. She wants to visit some friends in the city this evening anyway so it's not much more of a ride from Center City to Langhorne. I'd just need to know in the next 45 minutes if you're on here and want me to bring you some.

Chris

A GIANT THANK YOU to Chris & his wife Liz for stopping over & chatting & bringing me some 0871!!!!! Such a lovely, nice couple! Thank you! :)
Okay, here are the counts:
Chlorine: - it took 40 drops of 0871 to change from pink to colorless - so that is .5x40 = 20 ppm for FC
Combined Chlorine - 2 drops to turn to colorless - .5x2 = 1 ppm for CC
PH 7.4
Total Alk - took 10 drops to change to red - 10x10 = 100 ppm
Cal Hardness - took 30 drops to change to blue - 30x10= 300 ppm
CYA - 50 ppm

Sooooo, with all the results in and pool still green and brown stuff on the bottom - (water drained yesterday down to 1 foot in shallow end and refilled immediately) - what are my next steps?

Thank you!!!!

You could have not got the 0871 at a better time. 20ppm is your SLAM level! In the morning check it again and put your current FC in the box. Then put 20 in the target. Make sure you have trouble free pool selected. Then add the amount of bleach it says to add to get to 20. If you can check every 2-3 hours and add as needed.

You only need to test FC and CC for now.

I will let Leebo address anything else.

Great! Thanks. I told Leebo I don't understand that calculation chart - he was going to walk me through it. I just want to be told how much of what goes where.... I don't want to make any more mistakes. :( I've hit my mistake quota for the next couple of years! lol.

Numbers this AM:
FC - took 30 drops this time to change to clear - So FC is now 15 ppm
CC - took 1 drop to turn clear - So .5 ppm CC
I will try to put in the chart #'s and let you know what it says and please tell me if I am reading it right. Thank you
