Planning Build in SC, Should I get a heater and what costs can I expect?

I will be building in Jan '18. I am deciding about getting a pool heater. Does it need to be run daily. During what months does it usually need to be run? I would like to swim from the first of April until the end of Sept.

It seems that in the forum I read about a lot of people having heaters but rarely using them.

TIA!

Well, can you narrow down your location (update your profile to include the city, this will keep it in view keep it in view) just a little? The need for a heater is going to be different if you live in Oconee vs. North Myrtle Beach.

The second consideration is what is an acceptable swimming temperature for you? Here in the midlands my pool (no heater) gets to 70 and generally doesn't drop back to that until Sept/October. Right now it's sitting at 85.
