Looking for help with my pentair multiport replacement. Sand filter is from 2009. Original multiport was leaking badly. Purchased a replacement but it doesn’t seem to seat properly. Was there a design change and I need to cutoff the vertical pipe? The picture shows how it extends out of the sand filter.IMG_0989.jpegIMG_0990.jpegIMG_0993.jpeg

Thank you for your help.

What is odd is that the old one still fits perfectly (see picture below). The new one slides on then binds up like the new version isn’t as wide where the pipe slides in. That is why I wondered if they changed the design slightly

I even took some sandpaper and went around the outside of the vertical pipe.

I also put a little dish soap of the vertical pipe.

It just doesn’t want to fit on.

Independent of the issue that the last one fit, and this one does not...

This does not look like it is correct for the sand dollar filter.

The standpipe should be level, or slightly below the top flange of the filter.

This is what the bottom of the piping assembly looks like:

The piping assembly fits into a hole molded into the bottom of the filter, and is one piece...so there is no other way for the piping assembly to sit higher than the top of the filter.

The only way it should be standing proud is if sand or something else has gotten into the hole and raised the piping assembly.

Ok, back to the design changes.

Do us a solid and measure the following on both MPVs:
1) From the flange face at A to the bottom of the MPV at B.
2) The depth of the socket in the MPV from B, up to the stop on the inside.

First off, thank you again, I opened a ticket with Pentair on Saturday, the response I received today was “where is the leak located”.

So here are the two MPV’s side by side. The flanges are both the same height.

I took a piece of 1.5” tubing and inserted into both MPVs. Both measure 6 inches deep.

What is the height of the flanges (between A and B)?

Given what you have described, I'm stumped.

Unless you can put a caliper on the piping assembly, and have a bore gauge (inside micrometer) to measure the deep end of the bore of the new unit...to confirm or deny a manufacturing defect, or the standpipe has a larger diameter than the 1.5' you used to confirm 6"...I'm stumped.

P.S. Nice wiener dog!

Ok, I got something. I found a piece of 2” pvc pipe I can insert it almost 5” into the original MPV. I can only insert it about 3” into the new one. So they must have changed the taper on the inside of the MPV over the past 15 years.

So should I buy a new lateral kit and change the sand in the filter?

'Twer it I...I would return the MPV and purchase another (or explain to the company you bought it from the problem and ask for a replacement). If it is a defect in that one unit, then it would resolve the issue.

If after returning, the new doesn't fit either, then I would consider your approach.

Is there a model number on the filter itself?

It is a SD80.

I bought the MPV from Pentair via Amazon. I’ll be curious how this return goes.

My three rescues all say thank you for your help tonight. Stay safe!

Well, the sun was out today (rare for Syracuse this time of year) so I went ahead and vacuumed all the sand out of the filter. Evidently, the standpipe assembly was just sitting on sand. Now that it is all cleaned out, it is below the sand filter flange and everything fits like it should.

Unfortunately, my pool guy put his filter sand away for the winter so I won’t be able to refill the filter.

Guess this is the sign I should start thinking about closing the pool for the winter.

Thanks again to everyone for all their help!

Why can't you put the sand you vacuumed out back in the filter?

I probably could have. Unfortunately, I assumed it would be easy to go to the store and buy new sand so I spread the sand throughout my yard as the shop vac filled up.

The sand was pretty old anyways, it had only been changed once in fifteen years. Now I have all winter to decide if I will go all sand, glass bead or a combo of pea gravel and sand.
