I do take my kit with me when traveling. No way I'll take a chance on myself or the family getting sick from unsanitary pool water while on vacation. I have also reported pools while traveling but first I try to alert a staff member, if they won't do anything than I contact the health department.
I was an aquatics director and have worked in the pool industry so long that it has turned me into a total pool snob. I used to teach swim lessons in our community. I would go to community pools, and residential pools. I have since stopped that because of terrible pool maintenance. There was one pool with a really dark liner....it was almost black. Everything was so slimy and gross and with the dark liner you couldn't see anything.
Amusement parks are normally pretty good about keeping FC high but they don't pay much attention to CYA. Here in our area, amusement park pools stay at or above FC of 5ppm. They do this so they don't have to close for a fecal or puke accident.
However, at the YMCA we kept levels between 1-4ppm and we closed for any fecal or puke accidents. Chlorine was usually around 3 at the Y. The health department was always happy with this.
If going to community or hotel pools, it is best to go in the morning. If the pool company checks and add chemicals they do so in the mornings before the place opens. The only thing here is that you don't know how much they have added. At my mom's apartment pool in Vegas, they check twice a week. YIKES!
