Northlake, TX New Pool Build

July 4 test results...

FC 1.4
pH 7.5
TA 70
CH 225
Temp 82

We had a big rain storm last night. PB is here and he also tested the water and his FC reading is 5 which is where I asked him to raise it to. My FC reading is much lower with TF-100 kit (R0870 and R0871). PB uses a commercial taylor kit K2005. When I use the K1000 reading is much higher as well. So...what am I doing wrong to get such a low reading on my FC???

Good morning Cliff!! I'm definitely no expert here but.... I'm also wondering how you are getting FC readings of 1.4 etc. So you fill the cylinder with 10 ml of pool water and then add a heaping scoop of R-0870 and swirl it should turn pink....then you add R-0871 one drop at a time (counting the drops) and swirling until the once pink solution turns clear. Then however many drops you counted you multiply by 0.5 that should be your FC :)

For instance if it took 5 drops of R-0871 to turn the pink solution clear your FC would be 2.5
Anybody correct me if I'm wrong since I'm still a newbie at all this too ;)

Can you write up how you've been doing it?

Thanks, D

Hi Texas D...I'm doing it just like you describe...maybe I'm not using enough powder or I have bad powder??

I am such a dummy (don't say it!)...I was multiplying my powder test by.05 vs 0.5...HA HA

Yep, that's right! Blame the teacher!! Lol!!! :laughblue:

Here's a retired teacher's perspective.

I wish the directions for the DPD drop test would be changed to:
"Divide # of drops by 2."

How many times do we say something like, "Here are 10 dollars for you two to share. Now multiply by 0.5" It may be the correct science math application to use, but not for the rest of us. Multiply usually indicates to make bigger.

Yes, my analogy is a little off in ctrav's situation, but that mistake probably wouldn't have been made with 'divide by 2'.

Happy Fourth!

I totally agree with Suz on a simplified instruction of divide by 2...

We had a great time and so happy to have had the pool ready by the 4th. Recently completed the steps and retaining wall so now time to address the lawn...

Lookin' good!

TA: I'll let pooldv or Kim address the 60. Your PB probably added more MA.

CYA: I did the same as you, tried to guestimate an actual # like on the pH test. The folks here told me on the CYA test to go ahead and round to the closest line marker and use that number.

CSI: Using your numbers with a 20K gallon pool and a bleach pool (for now), I get -0.28 . Again, I'll let Kim or pooldv address that. For my learning, what level CSI is best for 3 day old plaster.

One of my little touches to the build...

I will round to nearest number next time which would be 40. I will wait for Kim and pooldv to check in on the other stuff...Thanks Suz :D

Yay! Family and friends in the pool havin' fun on the 4th!!! Oh yeah....... Look at the girls - so precious! How do they like being in the pool?

Your pool always looks bigger to me than the specs say. Look at all the swimmers in the pool and still lots of room! I love your scuppers - that's what I want next time. I think the tile is perfect. With the dark water and dark coping, an all dark tile wouldn't show. It gives the pool definition. For me, I like seeing where the pool edge is. Your wife chose well!

The steps and retaining wall look great. It's all tying together beautifully! So perfect for the setting.

Thank you, thank you for the pictures! Keep them coming!

Oh, Oh, Oh!!! I just saw your pics of the lighted steps! Is this one of your 'surprises' you teased us with? I love them, and you needed those. I'm so impressed with all the details you thought of and included! I don't have anything like those, and I love steps. I want to see a picture of how the lights show when you're walking toward the pool.

The blue lights look great! Are you happy with the light coverage? Is there any more construction-wise for your PB to do?

Well done, Cliff!

Thanks Suz...yes the lighted steps was one of the surprises :) Two more surprises to go (just small touches). PB has to put up the fence around the extended patio (fence has a surprise [hint], big rocks/boulders have to be relocated, yard has to be graded and more sand/dirt brought in, Put the fence back up and we should be done as far as PB goes. I hired an irrigation guy who will also do the sod and that starts next week.

I do like the lights and girls love the purple one. If I had it to do over I would put small lights in the ledge cut outs and I would have had lights (like the ones on stairs) added (3) to the retaining wall. This way it would provide a soft glow on the mesquite tree.

There are one or two other things I would do but I am very very happy with the way things are turning out...

You can try a couple of solar uplights on the mesquite tree which might also glow a little on the retaining wall. Put one on each side of the tree maybe facing each other - NOT facing the house. If you don't like them, they would be easy to move elsewhere.

I have had this one for a little over a year. It's been one of my best solar lights and has the separate solar panel I like to have. You don't have to worry about other plants getting in the way of the panel. But..... it's currently not available on Amazon. I'm still giving you the link so you can compare other lights to it's specs. I paid $27.99 last March.

I'll let you do your own research if you're interested, but here is one with good reviews and higher lumens. I don't have this one. It's 35.99 for two spot lights and one separate solar.

That is so sweet...I am one step ahead of you. I already bought some from Costco :) You know me always looking and since the wife has given me a little free reign I'm taking advantage of it...

LOVE the pics! Those two cuties are what it is all about! Looks like your pool was a big hit! I am glad to hear the girls are getting swim lessons. Have they taught them what to do IF they do fall in? Roll on to their backs and head to the side. If not let me know so I can give you some pointers how to teach it to them. It could save their lives if they do fall in when someone is not around. Better safe than sorry!
