Newbie with Algae (weaning off of Leslie's)

Profile and signature are two different things. Click the link I posted.
I really can't see much detail in your profile - that is why the signature is important.

Your filter may be just fine for day to day use if you don't mind cleaning it frequently.
The larger the filter the less you need to clean it. I hafe a 12300 gallon pool and a 420 sq ft cartridge filter. I clean it whenever the filter pressure rises 25% avove clean pressure (pump at 3000+ rpm). It's nefer fone up 25%, but I still clean it yearly.

As you have found out, your filter clogs up quickly when trying to vacuum during a SLAM.
Ok so interesting.

First thanks for the assist on the signature.

I do mind having to clean the filter all the time. I've been reading about people who can go a year without cleaning theirs and that sounds like fantasy land to me. So is it just a larger filter cartridge or is it the entire housing too? (Assuming it's the latter since I am buying a cartridge that's appropriate for the model I have).

Aside from triphosphate and the 1:20 acid bath is there anything I can do to better support the filter cartridges during a slam?

Cartridge size and quantity are specific to filter housing.

I don't think you need to do the TSP or acid bath during the SLAM Process.
You may want to do it after the SLAM is successfully completed if you think it necessary.
Some members never do the TSP or acid bath for the entire life of their cartridges - and some have 7+ year old cratridges that are just rinsed well and reinstalled.

I hate to read anything into your pictures as angle, lighting, camera quality, etc all play a factor. But are you sure it's crystal clear water?

Examples: How Clear is TFP Clear?
Of course now I am experiencing some doubt now that I saw those other pictures. I think I can still get it a bit more clear relative to those pics.

Toss a quarter in the deep end.
Can you tell if it's heads or tails without really trying?
If not, you aren't quite there yet.

How's your cartridge filter pressure? How is flow out of pool returns? One issue typical for sand filters is that you can kill all the algae, but they're slow to filter out the dead cells. It might be the case that your cartridge filter is full of dead algae and needs to be cleaned, and more time given to get the dead organics out of the pool water.
