New to Pools, renovating/repairing abandoned pool?

So…I clicked on those equipment links and also got the “too good to be true” feeling from those prices and the advertised gallon rating. Does anyone know if that online site is a legit retailer?

I sure don’t want to rain on a parade but….just looking out
I was curious about that, it does way to cheap compared to others. Should I stick with more known brands?

I am skeptical that the Compu Pool CPX48 SWG is really for a 60K pool. And the 2 year warranty says they don't think the cell will last long.

Lists the CPX48 as having CL Power of 1.28 lbs/day which is less then some other 40K cells.

Caveat Emptor!

Also selecting the Calimar VSP says you never plan to have any pool automation.
I'll research the SWG more, I want to do it right the first time if I can but I'm new to all this and trying to find best deals I can.

Also is there somewhere I could look to research pool automation? I hadn't considered that but not sure what automation features are needed/available? If that pump is variable speed why would it not allow any automation? Just curious what I need to be looking for to make sure I have good equipment

Hi BigTuna! Man this one is going to be fun one!!!

Every one else has you covered with what to do to get your started on clearing up that jewel. I am going to touch on kid safety. Is there a door that goes out to the pool from the house? Does it have a deadbolt on it? How about windows? Is there a way to keep the kids from opening them? I strongly suggest you get door and window alarms for the house doors AND the screen room doors as well. I know you will tell the kids to not go out there but...........being a teacher of many years........I know they will try to and we sure do not want any accidents to happen.

Oh and Friday is TOMORROW!!!! Only one more wake up before that is YOURS!

Please feel free to ask any and questions about your pool and life with a pool or just life here on this thread. Keeping it all in one thread makes it easier for us to keep up with what is going on. As you can see we LOVE to help so ask as many questions as you want. Just keep feeding us by posting pics!

Best price in pool equipment often does not equal best value.

There is a lot of low quality pool equipment sold where the specifications are inflated and the equipment either does not perform as expected or does not last long.

The pump and the automation panel need to be able to communicate for the automation to do a lot of its magic with adjusting pump speed depending on devices being active or modes of the pool.

Discount salt pool is legit and seems to be basically a Circupool outlet though they do sell other brands. You might want to check out the Universal 55. Its the most chlorine output for the least $$ that I could find but I hear its got a few less buttons on the control panel.

Circupool makes their products very diy friendly. Other major brands are used more by licensed installers and don’t have great warranties for diy. Plenty of diy use the other brands too and just don’t have as much warranty protection

I ordered that same pump and other items from pool supply unlimited on Monday and the items were just delivered.

That saltpool place looks shady.

I look forward to seeing you get that pool dialed in! You've come to the right place!

Thanks Kim, and yes that is something me and my wife have already been thinking about "kid-proofing" the pool. We have deadbolts on the back and kids have never messed with windows, but we want to replace the deadbolts with ones that require a key from the inside. We are definitely looking at alarm systems that notify when a door/window opens as well. Thank you for mentioning that topic, it is something that we are definitely concerned with. Kids can swim (kind of) but we are looking for true swim lessons for both just to have a better understanding of pool safety.

Everyone has been so helpful, I am very appreciative of this forum!

Thank you all for the detailed replies. I will research all of the automation stuff later today!

I will look more into the SWG's recommended. It is all overwhelming right now so I am trying to do everything right without taking shortcuts or buying subpar equipment.

I looked at those review of that online store then followed up looking at BBB.com and they do have a lot of complaints/negative reviews. I will be shopping elsewhere. Thank you for bringing that to my attention.

Other options are keypad entry deadbolts so don't have to keep up with a key, or an extra deadbolt way high up, or one high and one low door handle that requires high and low hand to open at same time. If you don't have a home alarm system, they sell inexpensive battery powered alarms that just stick on at Home Depot.

The people we bought our house from had little kids and had a simple slide lock on the front door and basement door. Dead bolts are to (try to) stop an adult from kicking the door in.

Feel free to overkill the snot out of it. I get it. :) but the most basic of deterrent devices is enough to stop a little kid.

*also, at 5 and 8, set hard rules and stick to them. Our pool had its own fence and if either kid went by the pool without an adult, they lost the pool for a month. My kids were your kids age at the time and they fully understood and respected it on day 1.

Their friends though, especially the newer ones, didn't know or care to respect our rules. That was a constant battle and had me on edge any time a visitor was over on a non pool day.

On second thought, get pin code dead bolts everywhere.

I looked at that and was pleased to see that while the obvious settings were fewer, you also have the "Winter Mode" setting. If its like my Winter Mode on my Compupool it just halves any setting you have selected. So in fact you have additional choices to make. The device won't care if you've selected the Winter Mode in July.
Just a thought.

Closing for delayed a couple times but we finally made it on April 1st. House was a disaster. Spent first 2 weeks throwing out previous owners hoard, ripping up carpet/tile, and laying new floors but finally got back and pressure washed and started on pool.

I have gotten the new pump and filter installed and running as of yesterday. Prior to that I shocked the pool and used a sump pump to circulate. My main goal was to clear up the tadpoles and so far hundreds have been removed.

I've spent many hours scooping leaves, tadpoles, and debris from the pool. Last night I ran the pump and filter only using the skimmers (didn't want to suck all the
mud from the bottom). Also the previous owner did leave a safety net that had not been used and was in surprisingly good condition.

I'll try to post more updates as it progresses. Any tips or thoughts on the progress so far are always appreciated

The smell along had to be bad :( Well done so far.

Do you have a GOOD test kit? Test Kits Compared With your starting with it green I strongly suggest the TF-100 XL as you are going to go through quite a bit of regents.

Until you get the test kit find and buy a lot of liquid chlorine aka bleach. See if a local pool store has it as that tends to be fresher. If not then Lowes and Home Depot have it BUT make sure it is no older than 3 months. Walmart might have their liquid "shock" it is just bleach in different words. IF you do end up having to buy bleach make sure it does not have any pretty smells or splashless or anything extra in it.

Add a gal of chlorine each day and run the pump 24/7 to mix it up good.

Thanks for the advice, I was wondering how often to add bleach. I have been buying chlorine from the local pool store. It is actually much cheaper and higher concentration. I have a test kit that the owner left here but no idea how old it is considering the pump hadn't worked in years. I plan on ordering the test kit from here this week.

I have not installed my SWG yet. I plan on adding it to the system once I get the water in better shape. I buy 5 bags of salt every time I go to Walmart so I dont have to load and unload 800lb all at once :ROFLMAO:

Congrats on the new house and pool!
I know you've been focusing on the equipment and clearing tadpoles and this may be a dumb question but I'll pose it anyway. Have you checked the state of your liner? I ask because it one picture I can see that it's popped out of the track and it looks really faded. Has the liner turned to brittle hard plastic or is still "soft"? Given it's been neglected for so long, just curious on the condition of the actual liner.
