New to Pools - Pool Closed for FOUR YEARS.....HELP!

The pool kind is what you want. Instructions are in pool school. It doesn't take alot but I have found it really helps - especially on the foreclosure pools that I've done. They are stubborner (is that a word?) than most pools, I don't know why that is.
Sounds like a word to me! :D LOL. I am a firm believer of making up my own words. Haha. Ok, walmart sells the DE pool stuff so I will grab some and follow the pool school instructions. Thank you :)

OK, DE added to filter. Hope this helps.

On another note, several times a day it looks like sand or algae on the bottom of pool. I vacuum and then it is there again later. How can I find out if it is sand or algae? And, how can I tell if it's coming back into the pool from the jets?

by unscrewing the eyeball and slipping a nylon knee high over it and reattaching the screw on part. Hard to describe and maybe a failed attempt or 2 to get it to stay. Be sure the pump is off when you are attaching it. :)
OK, I left the panty hose on the return jets for approx 2 hours and I didn't get anything in them. Does this mean the filter is working or should I try this test when I am vacuuming to make sure it isn't returning the algae?

when I have had cloudy water from algae, I have always gotten a "sandy" debris on the bottom of the pool from the SLAM - I believe it is dead algae - and I have a DE filter which obviously can not send sand to the pool - I always assumed that some of the waterborne algae died and fell to the bottom before it was pulled into the skimmers or main drains to be filtered out - I keep my Dolphin running frequently during a SLAM, and I have to clean out that "sandy" stuff constantly when that is going on

It is dead algae from the pool, not the filter. If anything passes through your filter that you can see then there is a problem with your filter. It shouldn't happen.

Thank you both!!! Slowly but surely we are getting there :)

I also think the tree cover makes it seem cloudier. It's windy today so all kinds of goodies for me to clean up later today. Here are some pics. If you look past the tree debris, you can see my liner. Cloud and tree cover make it so hard to get good pics of the deep end but it's quite similar to the shallow end :)

What happens after slam?

Once I am done my slam (which should be any day now), what is done each day? I am just curious if it's normal to put in bleach every day or just once a week? What is the norm?

And....do you just then let your FC drop to the normal range and then maintain it at that point?

My water is clear....I can see the bottom very well. I am still vacuuming algae daily or some kind of residue from all the trees I have...not sure. The water looks crystal clear to me.

When you pass the 3 criteria to stop the SLAM, you just let the FC drift down to the normal range for your CYA.

Once the FC is below 10ppm, I would run a full set of tests and see what might need adjusting (especially the pH).

Normally, a pool will lose 2-4ppm of FC daily (depending on sun exposure, CYA, etc). So it is typical to need to add bleach daily.

You have come so far in 2 weeks :goodjob:
I hope you spent a lot less $$ in cleaning up the pool than you spent at the pool store before finding us.

OK, thanks Jason!! [emoji2] Sounds like at that point it will just be a lot less bleach needed, correct? I have seen most are adding 1-2 gallons a week on average.

Ever since my swamp cleaning , I love seeing other people get there's cleaned up. My story is in my signature. Loving the TFP method again for my second season.
My husband and I were talking earlier about how we went from swamp to sparkle in just over two weeks and for less than $50 and the only reason that it cost that much was just because I had to get the CYA up. Super happy pool owner right here and all thanks to the AMAZING group of people here at TFP!! Thak you!! [emoji2] [emoji2] [emoji2]
