New Build in NE FL

I agree it looks like shotty work. I would get the pb to look at that work. I am not sure how travertine is laid but when we had our pavers they used a heavy packing machine which basically vibrated the pavers level. If they were not level they pulled up the pavers and added more base paver sand. Some of our pavers are not level now but they are 8 years old and we have had lots of rain etc. Some of the ones in the Flamingo lounge move a bit but those are thinner pavers which were laid on our concrete pad.

I know with travertine you will see every little imperfection in how level it is bc the joints are so tight so your eye is able to see the changes paver to paver vs a concrete paver like Tremron which has a wider joint. Also, I have read that it isn't good to run the tamper over the travertine pavers after they are set bc if there is an uneven area the uneven pressure usually causes the pavers to break and even a rubber cover on the tamper will scratch the travertine. I don't expect perfectly level pavers but there are areas that can be improved.

I called PB 4 times today. Ring once or twice and then sent to voicemail. Not to mention he told me to call him after we spoke on Wed regarding our decision on what to do after the accent tile issues.

We just had a strong storm blow through so now the pavers are nice and wet. Def want to seal them with that wet look as it brings out the color and variation so well. Also, a paver that I had noticed the other day that had a wide gap next to the house seems to have settled even more. Will just give this deck a few days and with all the rain and heat, let it do what its going to do, and then go mark issues with painters tape.

Love the way this travertine looks when it is wet

Part of the drain. The far right side goes out past the pavers and for now into the grass. The left side follows the house to half way across the deck and then stops so water way over there has no way to escape the drain. Hope they extend it.

Here you can see the drain along the edge of the foundation. It goes around the corner and stops at the opposite corner of this part of the house. But love this pic as it really shows all the lovely colors and movement that these pavers have

I'm so sorry you have to deal with all of this!! It's absolutely crazy to me that you have to supervise the PB's subs PLUS do quality control! I wish I had better words - but at least I can commiserate with you.

I'm also very sorry about your dad. I lost mine last year. I feel like I have delayed reactions all the time. I understand how the smallest thing can trigger all sorts of reactions and feelings you think are dormant ..... hugs to you. ❤️

All of that being said, your setting, those trees, that land AND your gorgeous travertine are STUNNING!!! [emoji7]

Well I love the step with stone! And that's a positive :)
But your more patient than me with all this little nonsense. It might be time for your hubby to start standing over the workers and exercising his right to free speech with the PB in person lol.
Show him his big country sode

We're NOT being patient though! We have both gotten quite loud with PB and the construction manager and even had the head owner out. I had a lot I wanted to say to head owner but I had to leave for a concert and he came by 45 mins after I left. Hubby and owner of the deck crew almost came to blows after he popped off at me and I had to tell him how things were going to get done and then when hubby told him not to be rude to me again, he started arguing but finally settled that. The whole reason the head tile guy was mad at our build was bc we have been so active in making sure things were done right and then he came out and slapped the accent tile on like you-know-what and now we have a huge cluster. We have tried being super nice, offering snacks and drinks, then being firm in what we expect and still it doesn't matter. I have called and demanded the PB get out here and he says he will and never shows. Then he apologizes with a story about issues with his kids and the ex and eh, its hard to pop off when there are kids involved. It is also hard to push back too hard when they have allowed changes esp at no extra charge that most PBs wouldn't or upgrades at cost or no cost so it is a balancing act. I called him 4 times yesterday and kept being sent to voicemail. I don't want to have to have the head owner out bc honestly he isn't as easy going and flexible as the actual PB is as far as not charging us for change orders, buying materials at contractor price but not upcharging, etc so it is a tight rope to walk. I don't want to have these convos over the phone. Just like this whole tile issue. I knew he was thinking I was being dramatic (esp bc I had been a little too focused on the color differences in the stone which I admitted) but they did not believe us until they finally got out here and said they have NEVER had such bad work from him and were shocked. We also reiterated we are spending over $100k and this doesn't look like $100k quality work. Which now they are offering the upgraded finish and glass etc but still... It is very hard to find that balance of putting our foot down but not in our mouths bc we have gotten a lot at cost and at no extra charge etc. And I am just trying to make sure I keep my emotions in check and not let a sensitive time of year override my reactions to non related events. We just are so fried with this pool and other personal things going on and it is hard not to let them intertwine and effect each other at this point.

Hang in there. You have every right to demand the decking is correct. At present it's a safety hazard! You have to be strong not just for yourselves, but also for anyone who ever uses the pool. What you've already gotten is in the past and they offered, right? I doubt the owner wants a disgruntled customer in your area - tell him that. Stand your ground! Sadly, too many men in the construction industry dismiss women and blame their emotions. Hogwash! I've dealt with it my whole career. If you don't feel up to speaking your mind - have your husband do it. This is not a cop out!! An old friend once said when I protested about having to get a male boss involved with a chauvinistic landlord and how stupid that made me feel - she put her hand on her hip, cocked her head and said "HONEY - STUPID is not knowing how to get what you WANT!" So whatever it takes. Don't let a few grumpy, sloppy subs ruin this beautiful pool for you!! xoxo

Thanks AmyJo. Thankfully I don't have a problem standing up to men and voicing my concerns but I am just trying not to over react right now given all the other things going on and also not sounding ungrateful for how flexible they have been with our changes and such though I am starting to feel like we have been given these upgrades at no charge to try to smooth things over and make up for some mismanaged things.

Just found out from the construction manager that PB is out of town which is why I keep getting his voicemail. Construction manager said he will be out Monday to try to address our issues but I really want PB out and to talk to him face to face so he can see that we are not ungrateful for the things that have been done already but the current issues are getting ridiculous and something needs to be done beyond dangling my plaster finishes in my face to downplay the major screw ups as of late. At least y'all understand what we are dealing with and I feel justified in how I am feeling and that I am not over reacting given other current issues.

I understand. Still not a bad idea to let someone else (i.e. hubby) handle things if you're not up to it sometimes. Hopefully Monday will bring some resolution to these issues! ✌️

I'm sure things will all come together and y'all will end up with a great completed project soon. It's in the PB's best interest to get things corrected...

Hubby heard from construction manager... He was supposed to try to get over here today but says he is so slammed that it will now be tomorrow AM. PB was out of town so I called again today and it rang and rang and eventually left him a vm to call me.

The screen crew will be here tomorrow am.

We saw that the deck crew laid a type of mortar on the outside edge of the deck. However, many of the pavers did not adhere to the mortar and are laying on top just like the mortar was regular base. My reading on this was that the mortar bed is placed so the outside edge is secure and prevents shifting. Does anyone know how important it is to have the outside edge mortared down?

We have gone out and marked areas where the pavers are either too uneven, have bad scratches, or too wide of gaps.

I am not picking out all scratched areas but there are a lot of areas, that are involving more than 3 pavers, bc they had that huge saw running and left it sitting in the pavers. Since it was running, it was vibrating and sliding on the pavers which left these big circular scratches deep into the pavers. We also witnessed them tossing tools down onto the deck from waist height which also scratched it.

Sad part is, there are no pavers left over to replace any thing.... Still waiting to have THAT convo.

Our concern with the screen crew coming is that several pavers are on the outer edge where the screen will set. Including the end of the electrical conduit... They left the one end sticking up out of the pavers like it should but the other end that should be sticking out the side of the deck so wires can be placed inside the conduit is missing. Hubby dug way down trying to find it but its gone. We explained this to the construction manager but he seems to think he can fix all this an hour before the screen crew arrives.

So any info on the need to have the perimeter pavers set in mortar would be helpful.

Also, how level are others travertine paver decks? I don't expect it to be perfect but many areas are so unlevel that they can trip people and also prevents any furniture from sitting correctly without wobbling.

And should we have polymeric sand placed around these travertine pavers? We paid for it when we originally were going to have Tremron pavers. We just aren't sure if we should have it with the travertine bc its much smaller joints.

Right now, we have MANY areas where the sand is only at the very bottom of the joints but the top 3/4 is totally empty. Is this normal? Is this why polymeric is used? There are a lot of areas along the house where the sand puddled up after a rain.

******* Update *******

PB just called. Said the deck drain should run full length so will need to order more. I told him about the scratches and no extra travertine. He said he will be out tomorrow. We have also decided to forego the glass accent and do the upgraded plaster bc we just don't want to delay anymore. So shall see what will be done with the travertine and all tomorrow. Delivery truck is here now dropping off the screen enclosure parts.

Shantellylace it is very important to have the mortar at the edges of the pavers. I believe that they are actually Mortared in place. Here is a pic showing mine.

Thanks Brent. Do you think it changes anything with the fact we will have a screen? From how I have heard it explained, they will be drilling through the pavers and down to the footer to secure the screen and make it hurricane rated. Would that negate any loose pavers? Many of them we can lift up off the mortar as they didnt adhere to the mortar bed at all.

The edge of the pavers should be sitting on top of the footers. That is where they will be fastening the base of the screen. If you look at my screen you will see that the raised wall is my footer. They drilled thru the paver into the footer.

They put the paver base over the footer. I did not see them scrape the base off of the footer when they mixed up a very wet and loose mortar for the perimeter. I can go lift a paver tomorrow and look but the last I saw was base over the footer. But regardless, the pavers need to be solid in the mortar bed that attaches them to the footer before they drill through the pavers to attach to footer, correct? My concern is that there are many pavers that are NOT secure and are just sitting on top of a mortar bed that they didn't adhere to.
