New Build in NE FL

WOWZER!!! Your Blue Steel tile on the raised bond beam.... jaw-dropping! (I never can remember if it's Blue Steel or Steel Blue, sorry if I got it wrong). I know you're thrilled!

The pieces are all coming together. I can't wait to see it ALL when completed! I still absolutely love how the blue color of the 6"x6" tiles match with the glass - made for each other!

Suz, this is Blue Steel

 Sorry I had to! It was what instantly popped in my head! But thank you! We love how the wall came out and were so relieved when we found those ceramic tiles AND they weren't an upgrade!! Woot!!

Will, haha may be bias but I agree. I had toyed with this idea when I was making my list of ideas before we ever signed a contract but never could decide and with everything else going on just never gave it much thought even though PB kept asking and thought we were doing it. Will chat with construction manager tomorrow and see if we have enough to do it.

With the rain we may be able to swim next summer. Go figure you think starting in FEB you will not have any run ins with our rainy months. After the giant amount of money and funds that were destroyed for this project im officially sick of looking at it. On a more positive note they are suppose to do the coping tomorrow afternoon Ill believe it when i see it with the afternoon thunderstorms. We have decent days Fri and Sat then back to 50% plus for the remainder of the 7 days. Boo

I feel ya. I wanted to avoid our under construction pool for a while. It was too much frustration and stress. But once they get that finish on the shell, the sun starts shining again! Literally...

I get that hubby is frustrated esp as he is the bread winner in the house so it is hard to write these big checks and not see something that looks worth all that money. I can envision how this will look when it is done and I know when it gets there it will be so worth it and will probably be even better looking than I can imagine but yes, I am frustrated as well.

We were told the supply store is what took 5 weeks to get the correct color ledger stone to us after the whole color fiasco. My concern is this - we picked 12 x 24 travertine as coping on the spa bc it was supposed to be wide enough that one piece would stretch from the inside of the spa to the outside with the proper over hang and we would only have a joint as they placed them side by side. However, with all the cave in issues, the forms were not very rigid and the walls of the spa (and other areas but they aren't of concern) were very wavy. As such, when they came to place the ledger stone on the outside of the spa, it was so wavy they had to build it out a lot with mortar to get a level surface and now the wall of the spa is so thick that now twice as much coping is needed and there will now be joints side by side and inside and outside (I have expressed since the beginning my dislike of grout lines which is why I refused to use 6x12 coping on the spa bc it would have so much grout everywhere). I have reminded PB and his construction manager for weeks now that more coping has to be ordered to fix the fact that the spa is so much wider now and still, no more coping has arrived. If they take 5 weeks to fix their stone issue, how long is this coping going to take? Esp bc we need the same coping on top of the columns and walls.

Also, since they are coming to place pool coping apparently today (Thurs), isnt that supposed to be graded so that any water that is splashed out of the pool goes to the deck drain? So you need to know the grade of the deck? Bc we still havent had the grading issue fixed bc the grade was set during the dig and he set it for a pool further away from the house and it is too steep of a grade. PB told me they couldn't do the coping until they reshoot the grade and they can't reshoot the grade and figure it out until the existing concrete patio is removed so everything is set properly. Anyone care to chime in on this whole grading thing? We have existing concrete on the back patio and it is less than 18" away in some areas. Originally we were going to have the pavers placed over the concrete but when the tile guys came out to place tile, they discovered the grade issues as they were going to have to add over 3-4" of mortar to correct it with the existing concrete which is why he wants to correct it by removing the concrete and match it to the tile/shell. Btw not our mistake so we dont have to pay for this but I want to make sure everyone is on the same page esp as there is a new (and great) construction manager on the job but he just got thrown into this mix.

I wish I could help but I have not helped with any grading issues. BUT what you say makes sense. It is like dominoes.....one thing builds on another and none can be done until the first one is placed! Gurrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

So work was supposed to start yesterday but never saw anyone. Today construction manager showed and cleaned off the areas for the accent tile and was about to apply acid so they could start placing them but the head tile guy never showed. Ugh. So that never happened. Then the coping guy shows up and I walk out to talk to him and he hands me his cell to talk to his boss. I guess the fact that we are doing a sailor border and we have curves makes for challenging cuts so he wants to be here for all that and can't be here today. He says he will be out tomorrow to start the coping.

One of our Brazilians, "Edgy", who is the younger of the two who applied our tile and stone, showed up and he too was waiting for the head tile guy to show so they could start the accent tiles but again, he never showed, so the younger guy, Edgy, started grouting with the Laticrete grout on our Lightstream wall. He has never worked with this product before and PB had stopped by so explained how to mix it. Well I guess it was setting up too fast or something bc he said it was crumbling and not filling in the grout spaces completely. Sigh... He said you can add grout to those spaces where it is missing... I am wondering if it was bc it was 3pm and direct sun so the glass was quite warm and warmth speeds up chemical reactions so the grout set up faster than he expected so I said maybe grouting in the morning before the sun is on the tile and too warm.

So he moved on to the column and placed the stone there. It took more work than you would think as the way we had the columns placed, when the stone is on, the stone will stick out further than the wall with the tile and provide some dimension. Well, there is no corner where the column meets the tile so he had to cut corner pieces and piece everything together to give the illusion of it being a corner so there is a finished edge and not a cut edge on that side. I am ok with the uneven edge along the tile bc stone is uneven and the way the corner pieces were on the other sides were uneven as well. The only issue is on the back corner, there is a mitered edge that didn't quite meet and it is almost a half inch space between the 2 pieces so that needs to be taken off and fixed. I feel bad this guy was left to do all this work by himself as the boss just no showed and he really does take pride in his work and has done a great job so far, just need this area fixed. But other than that, the column looks lovely. Sitting next to the glass tile, the blue colors are really drawn out from the stone.

PB came by and we spent about an hour walking around the site and discussing various things. He said decking is going down next week so we have to clear off the back porch so they can shoot the grade and bust up the concrete and then prep for the travertine.

Found out about the grading - the coping will be set level based on where the tile is set. Then from there, the deck will be shot and that will tell them how much of the existing concrete they have to remove.

PB saw the travertine for the first time today and he loves it. He now asks if we really want the step risers done with stone instead of the travertine bc the travertine looks so good. Gah! Dont make me second guess again! We have to figure this out by tomorrow. Half of me says yes stone on the risers and half says no, clean, beautiful travertine. Ughhh

I also inquired about the abalone shells as the glass beads were $4900 for the whole pool and $1500 for just the bottom. So that is a no. But hoping the abalone shells are cheaper. Also have him making sure the plaster crew is familiar with hand casting them. So we will see.

I am so happy to just have something done today. I am a little anxious about this grout situation as this tile just cost so much but hoping they will get this figured out.

So tomorrow is supposed to be coping and then finish the other column and hopefully start accent tile. Then next week the deck. That will be a big push in the right direction. Trying to nail down a day with the PB of when the deck prep is done but they aren't laying down pavers bc we need the termite people to come spray the back area and that is the specific time they have to spray for them.

Pics!

Thanks! Edgy and "Manny", who was the older guy who worked with him, did all of the spa too and they really do amazing work. Edgy was here well past 630pm yesterday working on this column by himself. So many cuts and really, other than that one area, he did a fantastic job. Def not as easy as I thought once he showed me how he had to stagger the corner pieces from laying on the front and then laying on the side so that it looks uniformly uneven all around lol if that makes sense. Very happy with his work. He is very bummed his older co worker is leaving to move out of town this weekend. The boss doesn't even know yet so that is kind of a dicey situation. It stinks bc he is so good.

I just hope the boss guy gets his butt out here to start working and helping his guy. The only interaction we have had with him was when he came out and built the columns the first time and they were set back too far and when my hubby tried to explain it to him (very nicely too and not confrontational at all), he argued and got upset. Then when hubby said he would call PB so we could all be on the same page and make sure it was correct, he packed his stuff and left out of here really fast. So I am a little anxious about this accent tile being applied correctly per Lightstreams instructions so we cannot see the trowel marks through the glass. I know their method makes extra work for them but I showed PB the instructions which he said he shared with the tile boss guy and that's when we heard the price to install it and he knew what needed to be done. Found out yesterday that the glass was installed the same exact way the ceramic was so not sure what all this extra payment is for. But I really want the accent tiles applied correctly.

Hopefully Edgy can take this piece of stone off where the open joint is and fix it. It is very obvious so I am still surprised he didn't fix it yesterday. And if he gets here early enough, he could try grouting again bc I would think less heat on the tiles would allow a better cure time.

I bet your gut is right about the tile and heat. Poor Edgy :( all of that work on his own. He did an awesome making it look even/uneven LOL That one piece...well it can be fixed but would have been easier if he had done it before the stuff set up. I bet that was one of his last pieces and he was just wore out poor thing.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the accent tile wall!

Do you have a pop up canopy or big umbrella? If so I would put it up to keep that area out of the sun just in case they do show up to work. Every little bit will help.

Is there any way you can do a mock up using both the stone and the travertine? We will help you pick!

 so close but still so much to be done.

Kim:kim:

I had thought about the canopy thing... I think our friend has one we may be able to borrow. Not sure how to cover all the waterline though. But will check about seeing if we can borrow his canopy.

Good idea on a mock up. I will see if I can get any 6x12 pieces out. If not I will just make some coping pieces work for visual purposes.

They do truly! We are paying $6 a linear foot for the ceramic tile and $17.50 a linear foot for the glass. They get $2 for ceramic linear foot and $4 for glass linear foot. And our PB bought the thin set, mortar, and grout. So the guys are doing all the excellent work and that boss man is making a lot of money. That is why Manny is leaving. He could own his business bc he is so good but his work visa doesnt allow it. They are legal and pay taxes and such but can't start their own business so are kind of stuck working for such low pay. I didn't say how much we were paying for the work to be done and they asked we didn't mention how much they get paid as I know that can start problems but man. We were going to give them a cash tip when it was all done and now Manny is leaving and we didn't get to. We will still give Edgy some esp bc we are getting his cell phone number bc when it is time for the fire pit that we are doing, he said he would come out and put the stone and travertine on for us for cash on the side.

We got the canopy and have it set up. 1015am and no one is here yet.

I was able to grab some travertine and mock up the step. The one piece of travertine for the riser is taller than the step will actually be so it kind of makes the step look funny but just trying to decide stone risers or not.
