Multiple SLAM attempts

Can you post some photos of equipment pad? Including photos of MPV in normal operation and in Vacuum to waste?
Maybe you've got something backwards and you're pushing dirty water back into pool.

What are you wanting to see in vacuum to waste? The setting and water coming out?

I didn’t change anything on the plumbing and reinstalled the exact same model Pentair MPV.

I’ve been brushing all day trying to stir up the fines. within a couple of hours it all settle right back on the bottom. put some filter socks in strainer baskets and not seeing a noticeable amount of fine debris being picked up there either but leaves and stuff are making it in so it is doing its job.

I backwashed today and added a 1 1/2 cups (followed recommendation of TFP for adding DE) of DE and psi didn’t rise hardly at all. Didn’t seem like the DE was making it through the filter but who knows after its way through the filter. didn’t want to add anymore than that. I have always vacuumed at 2200 rpm for more suction with no issues. I added pool sand from a pool store. Possible it’s just Darn sand? It met the specs for the filter but who knows these days with the quality of this stuff. I placed a sock around the return. Didn’t really catch anything at the end of it but had some green at the area where I tied it on to the return. I don’t think that as from the return but the draft of the water coming out pulling debris from the water to the sock, if that makes sense. Once all this settles over night I’ll try vacuuming again to filter first. It it starts clouding up I’m going to shut everything down…inspect the spider gasket. If that looks ok, I’m going to remove the MPV and inspect the new sand. If all that looks ok, I’ll just vacuum to waste until it’s all out and keep filling pool up.

I have bottom drains so shouldn’t lose prime with vacuum hooked up and bottom drain open, correct. Don’t want to burn my pump up .

You will not see the pressure rise, when you add DE at low speed. Run at high speed when adding, then lower the speed to filter.

Ok…see if anyone can problem solve this. I backwashed two days ago and added a 1.5 cups of DE. Pump has been running 24 hours a day.

• I’ve been running pump at 1700 rpm. Nothing coming out of returns. Filter sock on skimmer basket. It is definitely catching fine debris.
• This morning I go to vacuum and these are the steps I take.
1. I fill hose with water then place in skimmer. I did not change the rpm or anything.
2. I hold my hand over vacuum port to get for suction. Nothing ic coming out of return at this point. Suction is low and I remember I didn’t close my bottom drain valve.
3. I turn pump off and then close bottom drain valve.
4. I turn pump back on at same rpm, no loss of prime….changed nothing.
5. I walk back over to make sure vacuum is suctioned to skimmer port.
6. Thats when I notice the return was spewing whitish debris back into pool.
7. I run back to pump to shut it off.

The only two changes made was attaching vacuum hose to skimmer basket and closing bottom drain.

I go and backwash and the site glass is passing “white haze” water through which is likely the DE backwashing out. Usually I get a brownish water for the condition of the pool and running the pump non-stop.

I backwash at 3000 rpm and rinse at 2000 rpm. I go and start the vacuum process without changing anything and a slight haze coming out of return then stops after whatever was in there is gone from it blowing out the first time and I shut it off.

It seems strange strange I start getting dirty water out of the return without changing anything but attaching vacuum hose and closing bottom drain valve.

Thoughts?

Benny,

Here are the only ways this should happen:
  1. Bad spider gasket.
  2. Incorrectly assembled filter.
  3. Cracked laterals or standpipe
  4. Errant o-ring or seal in the MPV
  5. Channeled Sand.
  6. Broken/damaged MPV spring
  7. Filter is dirty and the MPV is doing its thing, with the spring allowing overpressure to bypass spyder gasket
Solutions:
  1. Inspect and replace the spider gasket. Did you look for water in the waste pipe? (Bad multi-port valves typically leak some water to waste, so check for that.)
  2. Deconstruct and inspect the filter assembly
  3. Inspect and replace any cracked laterals or standpipe
  4. Inspect and replace o-rings/seals in the MPV
  5. Do a deep clean to remove channelling. Sand Filter Use and Care - Further Reading
  6. Inspect the spring vs. specs.
Hope this helps...

I suggest you backwash the filter immediately before you try to vacuum.

While some people like to vacuum into the filter I think it is the worst way to clean a pool. Get a pool cleaner that collects the debris outside of the filter.
