Looking at replacing pump and filter

Hey all!

I've got a pool at the house I have owned for about 3 years now. The best I can tell is the pool was built in 2006 and overhauled once with pebble tec but most if not all of the equipment is original. The filter is a Hayward C5520BHMB, pump is a Pentair SuperFlo 340040. Pool is about 25,000 gallons with an offset spa with constant spillover into the pool, heater and a rock waterfall on a separate pump. Automation is Aqualogic which also appears original to the pool with salt water generator.

The filter housing is really showing its age but still functions properly as far as I can tell, same with the pump although I believe it adds quite a bit to my electric bill. I am looking to for sure replace the pump but possibly also the filter. The filter seems the easy part though as I can find a similar Hayward 525 sq ft filter easily. The pump is the tricky part with the new energy efficient regulations. I don't know how the variable speed can interact with the current automation. I don't really want to change the automation as it works perfectly.

Can you help guide me in the correct direction of a pump that would be a drop in replacement and work with my current automation?

You need to check if your Aqualogic board is version 2.65 or higher to support a VS pump. For the cartridge filter you could also look at Waterway.

Software is on 2.92.

The Waterway is about a third cheaper than the Hayward. The filter OD is the same but the ones for the Hayward are 32-3/4" tall vs what is called for on the Waterway (32-1/16"). Do you know if they will fit the same?

You can run a Hayward TriStar or MaxFlo with your Aqualogic. @mas985 might know if there are other models that will work.

With regards to the cartridge filter compatibility I don't know. But you would get a new set when you purchase the filter anyway.

AquaLogic will support two speeds on a variable-speed Hayward pump. If your filter tank is not too deteriorated, a good coat of spray paint will add years to its life. You can try to match the color or use clear over what you have. While Pentair offers paint in their original colors for just that purpose ($20+/can now), I've been using inexpensive Home Depot paint for years and it holds up very well. I use a Scotch scrubber to remove the loose "dust" and spray away.

If you buy a pump and filter and one other thing from Pentair, they'll extend the warranty of everything you buy on the same invoice to three years. Just something to consider.

Thank you all for your help and suggestions. It looks like the 1.85 HP Tristar VS (W3SP3202VSP) would be ample size for what I need. Would there be any reason to go with the larger 2.7 HP pump? Seems like it would be overkill.

Is that because you can run it at lower RPM to get the same flow? I can imagine the ~$300 would get paid back over the first few years.

Yes. You likely can run the higher hp pump at 1200 rpm or so. The other will likely need 1750 rpm or higher.

Following up on this. I have purchased the Tristar VS 2.7HP pump however now I have some plumbing questions. It looks like I have mostly fittings and couplings but not much pipe to connect to. I have tried to color code the sections to make it easier to pinpoint which areas I am talking about.

Pic 1 shows plumbing going into the pump (yellow) and then out to the filter (green) with a valve that can be opened to drain water out (red). More views in the second and third pictures. I feel pretty comfortable with my assumption that the green and red sections and the valve just need to be cut and replaced completely as I don't think there is really enough there to cut and connect back, especially with the flow switch.

What I am concerned about is the yellow section. What can I do to either remove the white coupling and salvage the valve body it is connected to or retrofit something that will work? The new pump will need the same configuration.

The last picture is of the board. I am supposed to connect the pump to the top four connections however the part that plugs in and holds wires is not there. Can anyone help direct me to where I can get this piece at? I did a quick search of green PCB connectors but none of them really look the same and I haven't been able to locate the specs on the one I should be looking for.

With regard to saving the suction valve, a 2.5" coupler will fit over the valve port. Then, install a 2" reducer busing into it and you're good.
If you call Hayward, they may help you find that RS485 plug.
