Is that Algae?

If you are trying to get a test of 31 FC after the hour test...that is not how the SLAM works.

You test FC. Add what you need to get to 31. Wait an hour or two and do it again. It will likely never be 31 when you retest after an hour/two during daylight. At these high levels, between algae, sun and 1/2 life of chlorine, you will consume something in those 2 hours.

That is why we do OCLT. At night, without sun, if you don't lose FC, then we know you don't have algae...
I’m not trying to test after hours. The sun is still up. I will test after sunset and see where it’s at and see if I can do an overnight test.

Morning @Mdragger88!

My FC is at 28 this morning, so I've lost 2ppm overnight.

What now? Add more chlorine to get back up to 31ppm, test every couple of hours and keep adding to stay at 31, and do the overnight test again?

It's crazy because I really don't think that I have algae or any bacteria.

This is the ONLY thing I see.

Ok then the TFP cal is wrong on the site..
80, 90 and 100 are evidentally off by 1 on the calculator. 39%(ish) of your CYA instead of 40 is still plenty effective but thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Also, the human error factor really comes into play at those levels. Did you really make 62 perfect drops ? Often times when someone can't pass the OCLT with no CCs or signs of algae after multiple tries, we need them to let the FC drift down to 10 or 12 to manage the human factor better.

Yes, at the perfect angle and right speed. When I started doing overnight tests, a couple of weeks ago I would pass some and fail some but was always very close to 1ppm. What do you recommend I do now?

I would try the OCLT at a more manageable level and see if you can pass at 10.

Also, today I learned, (or re-learned) that we had to round somewhere and use 40% SLAM targets as a rule of thumb. 1 FC difference will never be noticed at these levels.

Ok so I will let the FC fall down to 10 and then maintain at 10 until I can do the overnight test? Also, leave my SWG off until I'm done with all of this right?

Yes. SWG off. Drift down to 10FC and run another OCLT. With no other reasons to suspect the SLAM should continue, you won't lose any ground by trying OCLT at a lower FC. At worst, it will be like pausing the SLAM for now.

And what if it drops below 10 during the afternoon, I should add chlorine to get it back to 10 so that at sunset when I test it's the closet to 10 possible.

I doubt it will if you’re @28ppm now- but yes.
About the video- algae poofs like that wheras dirt just kinda moves & re settles quickly.
Can you collect any of that & smear it on a paper towel? If it’s algae it will be slimy you may see a greenish tinge on the paper towel.

Impossible for me to collect it as it just goes away and disappears. Even with an ultra-thin skimmer, I can't collect it.

Should I get in the pool and go down to try and slowly touch it? I don't think it will smear, will probably just poof as you say.

It's going to take a while to drop, and not for nothing, you could use the break with all you've been through. :) You'll know about when it's coming and anywhere close to 10 is fine, say, an 11.5. If you were busy that day and it drops further than 10 the next day, it's no biggie and a 8.5 will be no different for what we're trying to prove.

Ok but once I'm around 10, the important thing is for me NOT to lose more than 1ppm overnight, correct?

What do you think of the video I posted?
It could just as easily be pollen or various other tree crud. I imagine your neck of the woods is sprouting out of control right now.
You've been vigilant and did everything you were supposed to. An active algae bloom would likely be causing a larger dent in the FC. That's why I'm suspecting a red herring making the battle continue unnecessarily. If I'm wrong than you'll feel better about it doubling down on Part II.

Yea, I have some trees that give off these little things and it could come from that. Again, I really down this is algae. The MAIN thing that concerns me is that I can't keep an FC in the range of 6-11 as suggested by TFP. I can be around 3-5ppm. AND I just upgraded SWG to a more powerful one....Should I just run the SWG more?

Goodness Clem I think I flubbed this, and badly at that. Apologies. I've been following this for quite some time and thought the SLAM had been ongoing. I see now it's only been a day. Hold SLAM for at least a couple days and see how it goes.

We'll keep the drifting down in our back pocket for now.

Do you see any of this crud on other things? (Patio furniture , car etc)
I suspect you have/had a small nascent algae issue that was consuming your fc due to the lack of proper fc multiple times. The next oclt will be a helpful gauge - do your best to perform the test the same way each time - uniform drops (about a drop per second) to prevent testing variances. If you pass the next oclt then raising to slam level knocked it out & hopefully you will find that your swg can keep up with your daily fc demand. If you don’t pass - keep slamming.
Also, I wanted to address this-
Your swg doesn’t know whether there’s 4ppm fc or 10ppm fc in the water, it just produces what it produces for the amount of time you have it set for. It needs to be set to replace 2-5ppm/day. It should be capable of this in your pool if it is algae free.
Example: If you start with 8ppm & your daily loss is 4ppm - you set the swg to produce 4ppm and it will maintain the 8ppm fc level. That would be about 5 hrs of run time for the larger 15k intex swg.

Not that I can see but we've had a lot of pollen down here recently.

Do I keep slamming and bring it back up to 31FC?
