Disconnect this section of pipe at the two unions and make a new union fitting that can go to waste.
Find a part number on the union to match it up or unscrew the fitting from the pump and make a fitting with a 90 to go to waste.
Put the pump on low speed and vacuum to waste.
You can install a 3-way valve between the pump and filter if you want, but you can get it done with a few simple PVC fittings today.
Do you have a waste hose that will go to where you want to pump to waste?

Please elaborate on why to remove it? Is the drawing below what you were thinking using pvc valves similar to the ones on the far right of my system that controls the sprinkler/waterfalls? I was going to try and locate some firehose or something as a waste hose. Any other ideas?

For a covered pool, it might have some use to help eliminate CCs, but only when you get CCs and not all the time.

The diverter valve comes tonight and I will build the waste line. When I am diverting to waste, do I need to add water while I am vacuuming so that the level stays at the proper skimmer height or can I wait until after I am done vacuuming to add water? I don't know what happens if you lose enough water such that it falls below the skimmer line while you are vacuuming....does air get in the skimmer system or is it sealed off due to the vacuum?

It will depend on the setup, whether air will get in or not.
Vacuuming to waste can lower the pool very quickly. In general, you do NOT want to allow the water to go below the skimmer. You can replace water while you are vacuuming, but it *likely* will not be fast enough to allow continuous vacuuming. You may find that it will take a few cycles of vacuuming, replacing water, vacuuming, replace, until you get the vacuuming done.
You are spot one. This is what I am doing. I can vac for 10 min before the water level drops too low. Thanks.
I would fill the pool to the brim beforehand to buy more time.
You can also usually gently brush any sediment to a general area to greatly reduce the vac to waste time needed. It takes a couple tries with half hour breaks for the cloud to settle but alls it takes is a little patience.

You are on the correct road now. The next big thing is getting your own test kit. I know the machine looks like it should work BUT we have seen it over and over again where their tests are wrong due to many reasons. One is they don't calibrate the machine often enough or at all. When I have more time I will tell you of my pool store test adventures.
Yeah, I was looking into them but havent read enough to understand the differences between the two kits. Do they differ by anything other than the magnetic stirrer?
