In ground spa very cloudy once heater and jets turned on..clear water in spa when in pool mode

Hey there, first time pool and spa owner. The pool is looking great and the levels are all good. The Spa is connected to the pool with a small overflow channel, the pool and spa water look exactly the same when in pool mode.

We turn on the spa heater and jets and all of a sudden the spa is so cloudy. Is there any reasons for that? Suggestions or additional tests to run other than normal pool chemical tests.

No to SWG. And use chlorine tablets in baskets of skimmers for the pool.

The acid in the tablets will damage your equipment if left in the skimmer baskets.

We recommend you put trichlor tablets in a floater in your pool.

Okay I just tested the pool. Seems like CYA is still really high so I need to drain some of the pool it looks like. I also took your advice and added tablets to the floaters instead of in the basket and doubled up as chlorine was low.

The white powder in the spa I vacuumed and it is like a fine white sand.

Rising CYA and needing to drain the pool to lower it comes with using Trichlor tablets. That is why many of use use SWGs to chlorinate the pool.

I hope you are not using Trichlor from Clorox or other companies that say Blue on it and contain copper as copper will cause staining. Copper in Pool Water - Further Reading

Okay good to know I will check the tablets. I will look into getting an SWG installed.
