Turn off the venturi skimmer valve, fully open the skimmer suction, put a plug in the venturi outlet in the pool wall.
Having a hairnet in the skimmer basket should help trap some of the debris or just remove the hairnet if it's an issue.
What's odd is that I do have a skimmer suction valve that I've never opened in 23 years but no hole in the bottom of the skimmer. I think there's a circle down there but I would have to break it out.

I will get a pic of it ( I knew I would be asked for it.) Like I said, it's a venturi skimmer right now so water comes in from the back and shoots through the venturi out into the pool to create the suction.
A&A venturi skimmers here also. If I manually vacuum, I wind up removing the skimmer basket and plugging directly into the skimmer suction port in the bottom of the skimmer. I do have to pull the sleeve out because the suction port is below that. See below image.
Since I have a valve for "skimmer" they probably did plumb it. Thanks so much for the drawing. I would not have realized the sleeve pulls out or that the suction port would be below it. I'll have to find out IF the sleeve still pulls out now. Thanks!
