I think the answer to this question varies whether you're talking:
- pool
- pool / spa with shared equipment
- pool with separate stand-alone spa (or simply a stand-alone spa by itself).
In my pool, I run filtration 24x7, because with a variable speed pump, there's very little drawback. At low speeds, the pump uses very, very little power (~200w). The upside is that it gives more filtration (water constantly running through filters, and more opportunities for the SWG to create chlorine. I'd do the same thing if I had a spa on shared equipment with my pool.
In my stand-alone spa, the "filtration" cycle runs the circulating pump (good - it's low-power, and keeps water filtering) but also runs the UV system (debatable as to the upside). The UV system, while it may sanitize whatever water passes by the bulb assuming the water stays in the chamber long enough, is destructive to FC, so this leads to FC loss. The factory default setting for filtration on my Jacuzzi brand spa is 8 hours starting at midnight...I'm contemplating turning it down...
