Help me wire my timer please.

So, this happened today.

Will this wire work?

The wire gauge will be fine, but you should have another 2 colors. You should have green for ground wiring, green is always and only ground. You should have white for neutral if this is wired 120v or red (or another color that's not white or green) if it is to be wired 240v. Using only one color wire is confusing, non-code, and is dangerous for anyone that may come along after you.

I plan to run my 1.5hp pump and my SWG from the timer.

You should use individual 12 gauge black red and green wires. Not a 3 wire bundle.

The wire should be THHN or THWN wire and run in a conduit outdoor.

Is the CB GFCI?

What is wrong with your existing wire from the circuit breaker?

Hmmm,.. the inside looks like 3,..it’s 120v.

I’m trying to get an electrician, since I obviously didn’t do something right,. So far everyone says “ I don’t do pools”

I was afraid the original wire from the CB is what caused the fire this morning??

I doubt it was the wire unless the wrong gauge wire was used.

From the little I can see of the wiring I think the wiring was done improperly.

Hhhmmmm,.. I’m not sure how to proceed. Everything ran smoothly all last summer,. And until today this season. I’m not sure how to diagnose the problem.

That is a 3-wire extension cord, without the ends, essentially. I see it on a lot of above-ground installations. It works but is not ideal. Individual conductors in conduit is best.

If it is going to a single breaker, then, yes it is most likely 120v. A double breaker would be 240v, but I never just guess when working with electricity. Even this, found at Harbor Freight, would take the guess-work out of the problem. For less than $10.00 its well worth it to find out. 7 Function Digital Multimeter

If you are not sure how to use it, read the instructions then practice on an electrical outlet in your home. Open electrical panels can be dangerous and it is better to have the work done by a pro,

Ok,.. I’m going to start with ordering a new timer so it will get here. Is there anything wrong with the new timer?

None of the wire to your smoked timer or the cable spool you have looks like it is outdoor rated wire.

Solid THWN wire run in conduit or UF rated cable is the proper outdoor wiring.

My husband has one of those and says yes, we are hooking to 120v
