I have an existing WhisperFlo pump with what looks like a replaced 2HP motor on it from previous home owner. I want to look at replacing the entire thing but wondering if 2HP is the right size for this pool? My pool is around 20K gallons. It has two main drains and two skimmers. It also has I think five total jets. It's all 2-inch plumbing. Attached is the current setup.

Do you think 2HP is overkill? Should I simply replace with 2HP since its been working?

I have a rather simple set up. Two skimmers + the main drain. Pad level is about 12 inches above skimmer. I have a 1.5 hp challender hi flow pump that is adequate for my 35,000 gallon pool. I do not have any special water effects just two returns..

A full 2 HP was overkill for your system. How many hours per day did you run your pump? Replacing my 1 HP pump, run 14 hours a day, with a VS 1.85 HP, running 24 hours a day at various lower speeds, saves about $800/yr at 8.9 cents per kWh.

A 1.5 hp will work great. If your controls cannot set the speeds, make sure it is programmable on the pump.

As long as you do not have a spa or water features a 1.5 hp variable speed will work very well in your situation.
